10 Historic Theaters Facing Tear-Downs

October 2, 2013

The Theatres Trust has added 10 new arts venues to its theatre buildings at risk register for 2013, which features 48 buildings in all, many in extreme disrepair and at risk of demolition from development proposals. Local campaign groups continue to fight for their survival, restoration and return to use as community spaces.

Theatres at risk #1
The Grade II* Brighton Hippodrome, a former variety and circus theatre. Proposed plans for a cinema conversion will remove its stage and subdivide its auditorium
Coronet, theatre at risk
Friendly Fires performing at the Coronet in Elephant & Castle, London, which is also at risk of demolition by developers, despite being a popular venue for gigs, club nights and events like Secret Cinema
Theatres at risk #2
Derby Hippodrome, a partially-demolished Grade II listed theatre was recently listed as an asset of community value. The Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust is campaigning to secure its long-term future
Theatres at risk #3
Dudley Hippodrome, a landmark building within a local conservation area, faces an uncertain future. Development plans by Dudley Zoo for an education and conference centre propose its demolition
Theatres at risk #4
Hyde Theatre Royal, a Grade II listed theatre, was purchased by an investment company in 2005, but is currently on the market for let or sale. It lies empty
Theatres at risk #5
London’s Grade II listed Alexandra Palace Theatre in Harringey is currently unused and in urgent need of restoration. The Alexandra Palace and Park Charitable Trust has been awarded Heritage Lottery Funding to prepare plans
Theatres at risk #6
Hulme Hippodrome, originally a music hall built in 1901, is in need of major repair and conservation. Youth Village is working with the local community and Manchester City Council to bring it back to life
Theatres at risk #7
The Grade II* Plymouth Palace, a sleeping beauty, remains closed and in poor repair. It is in need of significant investment, but could play an important role as a community venue
Theatres at risk #8
The Scarborough Futurist is currently only programmed to November 2013. Scarborough Borough Council, which owns the theatre, plans to demolish it and redevelop the site
Theatres at risk #9
Swansea Palace Theatre in Wales, shrouded in buddleia. Swansea Council is taking action to make the private owner carry out urgent works to prevent further deterioration

  1. All except the one actually being used, can benefit from a demolition and replacement. It would take more to remodel than to rebuild is my best guess.
I would recommend a survey taken from the surrounding community. What is their vote on what they want there? What could they actually use? What do they need? What would they actually spend money on? To put something in, or spend a lot of money on something that nobody wants is not wise. Get a collective opinion first, and actually listen.
