How to Keep Your Indoor Air Smoke Free

March 13, 2020

You always worry about all the pollution lurking outside. However, it would be best if you also considered what is indoors in your home. Outside contamination may enter your home and mix in with air molecules circulating in your home. Smoke can also cause the air inside your home to be polluted, increasing the risks for you and your family members to suffer from respiratory illnesses. Although there are air purifiers for smoke that you purchase for your home, it may not be enough to eliminate smoke particles in your home. The best way to ensure clean indoor air is to approach the problem holistically.

Take Out the Source

The best way to prevent your indoor air from being polluted with tobacco smoke is to eliminate the source of the smoke. However, if you are not the smoker, you may find it challenging to ask a family member to quit smoking even if they know the risks. If it is possible, talk with the smoker in your family. You can also try to set up an intervention to stop smoking by educating the smoker with the harm that smoking can do to non-smoking family members.

Control the Smoking

If you cannot convince the family smoker to quit, you can minimize the effects of smoke in your indoor air by controlling where the smoker can smoke. Assign a designated smoking area outdoors if possible. If not, you can assign a room where the smoker can stay while smoking. Make sure that the place is equipped with an outdoor exhaust fan so that the smoke and smoke-polluted air will be vented out of your home.

Clean the Inside Air

Once you established a smoking routine inside your home, your smoking room should be able to contain most of the smoke. You can now concentrate on cleaning up the remaining indoor air of your home by bringing in an air purifier. There are a lot of air purifiers that you can purchase for your home. However, not all of these purifiers have the capability of effectively removing tobacco smoke particles.

Tobacco and cigarette smoke particle sizes range from 0.1 to 1 micron with a lot of concentration in the 0.2 to 0.25-micron range. When choosing air purifiers for smoke, you should choose one that has HEPA filters that can trap in particles as small as 0.2 microns so that it can eliminate almost 100% of smoke particles.

Eliminate Tobacco Smoke Odour

If someone smokes in your home, you can easily detect the difference in air quality because of the tobacco odour within your home. Choose air purifiers for smoke with HEPA filters and carbon odour eliminating pre-filters to eliminate tobacco odour in your indoor air.

Regularly Maintain Filter

When you have your air purifier running for some time, you should periodically clean the filters. Check your purifier’s service manual for specific instructions for cleaning their filters. Not all filters are alike, and some air purifier brands may require you to use proprietary tools to remove and clean the filters.

You mostly spend most of your time at home than anyplace else. It is therefore essential to make your home a smoke-free environment so that you can ensure that your family members will not get sick from smoke-related diseases. High-quality air purifiers for smoke can eliminate most of the smoke particles in your home. However, you should make sure that the source of smoke is minimized if not removed.
