General Contractor

Do you know what you need to ask a prospective contractor before they start work? Let's take a look at the essential hiring a general contractor checklist and tips! In 2017, there were about 4.1 million contractors working in the United States.

With that many contractors to choose from, it can be hard to know who you should hire. Do you know what you need to ask a prospective contractor before they start work? If not, let's take a look at the essential hiring a contractor checklist and tips!

  1. Check Their Licensing and Insurance

Before you hire a contractor, you should make sure that you check their insurance and licensing. Different states have different requirements for contractors, so you should make sure that the contractor is up to code on your state’s requirements. Some states even require contractors to give you proof before they can even start working for you even if you don’t ask.

Many people wouldn’t think to ask for the licensing and insurance, but if a contractor doesn’t have them, you could end up paying costs you never would’ve imagined.

  1. Make Sure They Don't Try to Pressure You

When you are interviewing contractors or getting a quote from you, you shouldn’t go with one that is aggressively pushing you to make a decision. Make sure you get multiple different quotes and do your research before you go with someone. Don’t make an immediate decision especially before you sign a contract.

If you’re asked to pay a large decision before work has even started, there should be red flags going up.

When you do get the contract, make sure that you read all of it, even the fine print.

  1. Check Their Past Work

If you still don’t trust a contractor, you can always check their past work as well. If they’ve done work in the past, they may have a list of references that you can check. That way you can see what the quality of the final product was. You can also figure out if they were difficult to deal with as well.

If no contractor can give you references, try asking your trusted family and friends if they have any recommendations for a general contracting company.

  1. Ask if They're Local

You should also try and find a local contractor. This will make things easier in the long run. If you end up going with a contractor who isn’t anywhere close to you, it could be a problem when you have an issue with their work.

If they’re near you, they’ll also be more familiar with the correct building codes.

  1. Make Sure They Put Everything in Writing

Finally, when you do find a contractor, make sure that you have everything in writing. You should never trust someone’s word, so make sure it’s in some kind of legally binding document. Find Out What Else is on a Hiring a Contractor Checklist! These are only a few things on a hiring a contractor checklist, but there are many more things to consider.

The bottom line is to make sure you do your research, and you should be fine!
