There are a number of ways to paint your ceiling. But, here are a few effective tips you need to have. So, you can do it right. You can come up with a paint sprayer for home use, or a paint roller. Painting a ceiling is one of the most basic skill sets that home renovators need to have.

Are you going to paint your ceiling for the first time? If it is, then firstly you need to prime your ceiling. Even if it is for the second or third time, but it contains some strains of smoke or roof leaks, you must do it too. Priming will take away all those ugly stains and spills.

It would be best if you sanded your ceiling before you start the final painting. Sanding helps to improve the smoothness and increase the paint bonding. You can use 100-grit sandpaper. After every sanding, you would take a wipe cloth or sponge and remove the dust from the ceiling.  

You have two options. You can use an eighteen-inch roller or a nine-inch. If you have an issue with looking up for very long, then you should choose an eighteen-inch roller. If you want to paint it so fast, you should get the edges done first.

So, here is another option for you. If you are not comfortable enough with a roller, you can use three and half an inch angled latex brush. This is equally effective but takes a bit more time. You can either use these two at a time. Use latex brush for the edges and roller for covering the mass area.

We recommend you use at least a five-gallon bucket. It will help you to be focused and will give relief of not refilling the bucket often. Don’t try to roll out a rolling pin because you will probably step on it and make a big mess.

Now, you are almost ready to paint your ceiling. The first thing you should do is cut the ceiling all the way around. It is against the wall because the walls are going to be a different color. The ceiling is going to be white, the walls maybe blue.

So, start in a corner and brush about four inches out on to the ceiling. Also, make sure you come down about one inch on to the wall. Then move on to the next section. So, here is an important thing, you always need to do your brushstroke back into your wet edge. That’s going to prevent you from getting start marks. Especially in the color change, this can really show up. Dip your brush often when cutting.

If you are doing the same color of walls and ceilings, then you will need to be cutting down on to the wall about four inches. Cut in four inches from any light fixtures too.

Now, you are ready to roll. The first thing is to get everything out of the way because you are going to looking up. Now, you have to decide in which way you want to roll the ceiling. The preferable method is to roll toward the primary source of natural light. If you roll the opposite, it might create a shadow of your painting.

So, the last two important things about rolling are; make sure your first paint coat is nice and thick. Don’t worry about being so clean and smooth. Number two is you need to go back to the beginning section and give it to the final smooth stroke.
