How can I make my roof last longer?

June 19, 2020

Owning a home is a lot of work and a costly investment. Balancing being a homeowner, parent, spouse, and employee can be difficult. Appliances break down, jobs require attention, children require help and some things need to be replaced regularly. It’s always in a homeowner’s best interest to look for ways to prevent problems or catastrophes later on. Maintaining your roof is one of the most important ways to keep yourself, your loved ones, and your property safe not only from the elements but from outside dirt and critters.

Check The Inside Of Your Home

After a bad storm or particularly wet season, you should go to the upper level of your house to see if you can spot any yellow, brown, or orange stains on the ceiling or walls. These are signs of a leaking roof. If you smell mold, or if your attic is musty, then you will want to have it checked for mold, which could be growing because water is seeping in from the roof.

Check The Outside of Your Home

Take a walk around the perimeter of your home and take a good look at your roof. Can you see any debris, such as tree branches or fallen leaves, collecting in the gutters or flat parts of your roof? Do you see any cracked shingles? Are there small animals, insects, or rodents living in vents or in the outer portions of your roof? If so, then it’s time to call a roofer.

Get Your Roof Regularly Inspected

You might be thinking “How am I to know what to look for?” Maybe you took a walk around your house and saw that your gutters and roof seemed fine. Maybe there was a small crack on a shingle. Is it worth calling a roofer over that? How can you be sure you’re finding problems before they turn into costly, necessary replacements?

The truth is, most people don’t know, and that’s okay. A great contractor knows what they’re doing, and also knows that you’re focused on keeping your family safe. So have a professional conduct an inspection of your roof every 6-12 months, or just before heavy snow or rainy seasons. They will be able to spot any incipient problems in your roof before they spread or worsen to the point where you have to spend thousands more to fix it.

When You Need Work Done, Hire A Contractor

You want not only to choose a local contractor but someone with a lot of positive customer testimonials and references. This is the person who not only knows the neighborhood but will also have a deep understanding of the legal processes necessary before doing any major work, such as acquiring permits. A familiarity with an area helps contractors provide the best roofing services to communities. When you are looking for a contractor you also want to ask for proof of insurance as well as any licenses they hold that are required by the state you live in.

Effective communication skills are a must-have for any roofer. A professional company with a high customer satisfaction rating, such as Jackson Contracting, is easier to work with and far less frustrating because you’ll be sure that your concerns are heard. A roofer should also be able to tell you about their sanitation methods and respond to any concerns you have about COVID-19.
