5 Things to Do When Looking for a Travel Buddy Online

July 2, 2020

Wanting to travel the world can be very frustrating if you don’t have any family members or friends who are up for going on the adventure with you. While there’s always the option of going on your own, you might not feel like it will be the same without somebody to share those moments with and take photographs of each other to upload to Instagram. Thankfully, much like people find their life partners online, there are plenty of ways that you can find somebody who’s willing to travel with you on the internet. Bumble for friends, social media groups, and specifically designed travel buddy sites can all be great places to start if you want to find a travel buddy. And, they could go on to be your best friend - or it could end up a nightmare. So, how do you find a travel buddy and make sure it’s a great experience?

Use a Reputable Service

Look for a travel buddy somewhere that’s got a good reputation for it. Avoid using dating services or similar to find a travel buddy, as chances are you’re going to attract people who aren’t really in it for the adventure but more for the hopes that they get to have some sexy fun with you - unless that’s what you’re looking for, of course! Social media is a great place to start; there are plenty of Facebook groups dedicated to travel and many people who’ve successfully found a travel buddy might be able to point you in the right direction if they can’t come along with you themselves.

Check Out Their Background

The last thing that you want is to find out mid-way into your trip that your new travel buddy is actually a wanted criminal, so if you’ve got some people who are interested in coming on an adventure with you, it’s worth finding out some more about them. You can use a site like Public Records Reviews to find more information on things like offender records, court records, or arrest records to see if your potential travel buddy has a less-than-savory past. Sure, you might find something like a speeding ticket or a warning for petty theft when they were a kid that might not really bother you, but on the other hand, you could save yourself from being in a lot of danger if it turns out that they’re wanted for murder. Don’t take any chances.

Spend Some Time with Them

Once you’ve narrowed down some potential travel buddies and checked that they’re not career criminals or wanted by the police, spend some time getting to know them. Somebody could appear to be the perfect travel buddy on paper - and maybe they would be for somebody else - but if your personalities clash or you disagree with them on some major things, you’re really not going to have a lot of fun together. It’s a good idea to try and find your travel buddy at least a few weeks or months before your planned trip so that you can really get to know them and spend some time with them in-person; not only will this help you make the right decision when it comes to who to take, but it’ll also be a lot less awkward when you set off on your adventure together.

Find Out What They Want from the Trip

You might have a hundred ideas for your perfect trip, but if your travel buddy wants to do all the opposite things, then is there really much point in going with them? You’re not going to have a lot of fun if you want to visit all the landmarks and take part in activities when all they want to do is drink every night and sunbathe during the day; you will probably feel like you might as well have gone on your own. Make sure that your preferences are aligned when it comes to travel and have a conversation about the things that you both definitely want to do; you can always compromise when it comes to putting together your itinerary so that the two of you are happy with your plans.

Talk About Money

Having conversations about money with people that you barely know can be uncomfortable, but if you’re planning to travel with this person, you need to know what their budget is and vice versa. The last thing you want is to blow through your entire travel budget on the first day because they brought a whole lot more to spend than you did. Have a frank conversation about your budget for the trip and how much spending money you plan to bring, so you can both plan your activities around what you’re both comfortable spending.

If you can’t convince anyone you know to travel with you, finding a travel buddy can be a great adventure and a great way to make a new friend. But, keep these tips in mind to make sure that the experience doesn’t turn into a nightmare.
