The on-going worldwide COVID-19 crisis has impacted our lives in more ways than we could have thought. One thing that has ground to a halt has been the housing market. Though few purchases are going through, there have been many people making moves to new areas and homes throughout the lockdown period. Here are some of the best tips to help you move into a new home safely.
Take Your Time
One of the most important things you need to do at this time is relax and make sure that all of your tasks are being ticked off properly. Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences we can put ourselves through, and we need to make sure that we are as relaxed as possible throughout it instead.
If you are working from home, try to take some time to handle the move. You don’t want to spend your days trying to work and instead glancing around you at everything that still needs to be done. By booking time off and tackling things bit by bit, you will be able to focus on each task bit by bit and at your own speed. At the moment, we actually have the luxury of time. Make sure you take advantage of it as much as you can.
Pack Yourself
Some of us like to hire professional packers to help our belongings get ready for the move. This could be an option for you, provided everyone wears gloves and masks. However, it is not an option if you have someone in your home who is potentially shielding. As a result, you may need to do much of the packing yourself.
The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you have plenty of storage boxes. Though there are some tips and tricks you can do, such as placing your clothes in plastic bags, there are still going to be plenty of your belongings that need to be packed up.
If possible, try to speak to your moving company about the best steps you can take. They could have some valuable insight into how to properly pack things as much as you can, such as how to correctly pack books or crockery.
Clean the New Place Before the Move
While you may want to get the keys to the new place and then immediately move across, try to take at least half a day to go through and give everything a quick clean. One of the first things you should do is clean down one big room – perhaps your future living room – so that you can deposit furniture and belongings into it as the move takes place. If you have to be out of your old place quickly, this means that you have one clean room that can be used as a dumping ground while you clean and prepare the rest of the property.
Try not to forget anything in this deep clean. Floors, windowsills, light switches, it is all fair game. If you do not have one yourself, hire a carpet cleaner so you can shampoo your new carpets and make sure that everything is tiptop.
Moving is stressful at the best of times and doing so during a pandemic is unlikely to be smooth sailing. Despite this, you should be able to find small things you can do to make the task that little bit easier. Embrace the move and make sure you act within the government recommendations. You will soon be in your new home and ready to begin the next chapter of your life.
