The Essential Checklist for a Successful DIY Loft Conversation

So, you’re planning a DIY loft conversion? Maybe by now you’ve realised the gravity of the task at hand, and you’re sat hopelessly wondering, “What have I got myself in to?”

Maybe you’re regretting even considering taking on such a laborious task on your own and frantically thinking of excuses as to why the project couldn’t go ahead? Rules and Regulations

The potential value that a loft conversion can add to a property makes it the smartest and most profitable ways of renovating, and it is a great way to add extra square footage without having to encroach on the garden or interrupt the flow of the rest of the house. This, however, does not mean that every loft can be converted in the same way, or even at all. There are certain rules and regulations that must be taken into account before getting started with your project.

Planning Permission - Planning permission will not be required for the majority of loft conversions, however, for larger scale projects or plans, to make significant changes to the external appearance of the roof, permission may be required. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Party Wall Agreement- If work is going to be carried out on a wall that is shared with an adjoining property, a party wall agreement will be needed. This is to inform your neighbours of the work you intend to do and give them a chance to dispute it. So, it’s always beneficial to be on good terms with your neighbours!

Fire Safety- For obvious reasons, it is imperative that fire safety is taken into account when planning your DIY loft conversion. All doors and exits must be fire resistant to FD20 standards, and any walls are required to achieve at least 30 minutes fire resistance. Furthermore, there must be a mains-powered smoke detector fitted.

Insurance- Be sure to contact your insurance provider to check that your cover will not be affected. Due to the extra risks that are present during a loft conversion, some insurance companies will need to amend your cover.
