Eco Home: 4 Ways to Go Green in Your Home

December 20, 2020

According to some studies, 20% of all of the carbon emissions in the United States come from homes, just like yours.

If you're interested in reducing your carbon footprint, you should think about making your house an eco home and go carbon-free!

But how do you do that? Thankfully, there are plenty of ways that you can ensure your house isn't contributing to the climate crisis.

1. Insulate Your Home

One of the first (and easiest) things you can do is to insulate your home. This will make sure that the heat and cooling from your HVAC system actually stay inside your home rather than getting trapped outside. This means that you won't have to run the system as often.

While you're not running that system very often, you won't have to pay as much in electricity bills, and you also won't have to use a lot of fossil fuels to do it.

There are plenty of easy and cheap ways to insulate your home, from getting plastic pieces for your doors and windows to getting thermal wallpaper.

2. Buy From Thrift Stores

Many people also spend tons of money on new furniture, but when they're done with it, it just ends up in the landfill. In order to keep your furniture from ending up in the landfill, try donating it or selling it to someone else who could use it.

And instead of buying brand new furniture for yourself, you can also try and find thrifted furniture on your own. Facebook Marketplace is a great way to connect with people who are trying to sell their furniture, and you'll normally save money on it as well!

3. Buy Less Stuff

Minimalism is a big trend in interior design right now, and it's also environmentally friendly!

We tend to pack our homes with as much stuff as we can, but all of these things end up leaving behind a carbon footprint. For example, if you order something for your home, like a new kitchen appliance, you'll have to use carbon to create it, package it, and then ship it to your home.

So before you start buying all kinds of stuff, ask yourself if it's really necessary.

4. Install Solar Panels

Another way to save money on your electricity is to find a solar installation company and have them install solar panels.

This will help to cut the emissions of all kinds of things from using your washer and dryer, your water heater, or your HVAC. This way you can use clean and renewable energy while also saving yourself some money.
