If you're ready to expand your business or are in the midst of a move and need more than a basic truck, a dry van trailer with tractor and driver option may be a more effective option. A dry van trailer is a big box, used for bulk shipping across the highway system. These trailers allow an efficient method of weather-resistant transport.

What Is a Dry Van Trailer?

A dry van trailer is a large shipping box that protects your product from weather, theft and other risks. It should be noted that your dry van trailer investment can protect products from rain and wind damage, but if you're hauling anything that needs to be kept warm or cold, this format may not work for you.

What Are They Used For?

Dry van trailers are generally used for items that are easy to hand truck or can be moved via a small forklift. If you're hauling something that's heavy or bulky enough that it can't be trucked on a smaller unit, you may be better off with a flatbed that can be approached from the long side.

Anyone moving household goods, such as furniture and boxes of clothing, would do well to work with a dry van trailer. Additionally, products that are boxed or palletized and plastic-wrapped in a small enough format that they can be moved with a dolly or a small personal forklift would be ideal.

Security and Stability

A dry van trailer will offer tracks in the wall where you can strap goods, in addition to being able to secure them to the floor. Dry van trailers are tall enough that they can be shaken up by strong winds and extreme grades, so take the time to secure the product inside the trailer before the driver sets out to avoid risks of a slide or tumble inside the trailer.

What to Look for if You Are Buying or Renting a Dry Van Trailer

When you're looking at dry van semi trailers for sale, take a hard look at the structure at the wing plates and cross bracing at the front of the trailer. If you can see any corrosion, the material was not galvanized and you may be facing internal weakness.

Additionally, take a look at the tires. Rubber degrades over time, whether it's on the road or not. If the tires look worn, cracked or sun-faded, consider asking the van owner to upgrade them or invest in new ones if you're the van owner. Old worn tires are a serious safety hazard for your driver and others on the highway. New tires aren't cheap, but they're less expensive than replacing damaged goods.

The year 2020 has led many of us to do a lot of online shopping, and major warehouses are being located at new facilities all over the country. Whether you're just moving a household or are moving a lot of product around the country, you're going to need reliable transportation. Investing in a dry van trailer is a great next step for your business.
