How to Avoid Mosquitoes and Ticks in the Woods

January 4, 2021

Regardless of your age, spending time outside in the woods is a great way to find peace and nature. What’s not to love about getting some exercise while escaping the pollution of a crowded city? Yes, being out in the woods is indeed a great way to unplug from the rest of the world and enjoy what mother nature has to offer. However, whether you’re hiking, trekking, or camping, a risk that constantly dangles above your head is getting bitten by disease-transmitting bugs like mosquitoes and ticks.

When at home, people can easily get professional help from residential mosquito control services to steer clear of these bugs, but the case is entirely different when in the woods. These bugs have the potential to pass on dangerous viruses, and nature-lovers need to be skin-smart when it comes to keeping themselves safe from these critters.

That being said, it doesn’t mean you should let biting bugs ruin all your outdoor fun. You must simply know how to protect yourself and prevent mosquitoes, and ticks get the best of you when you’re out in the woods with family, pets, or friends.

Here are some tips for you to follow on your next big adventure to the woods.

Treat Your Clothing with Permethrin

Before you leave for the woods, treat your clothing with permethrin spray. Not only does this spray repel mosquitoes, it actually kills them on contact. After spraying once, the treatment will last about 5-6 washing cycles. To do this effectively, hang your clothes outside or in a well-ventilated room; you can use a clothing rack. Spray the clothing thoroughly, flipping them to ensure full coverage—target areas like cuffs, ankles, and neckline. Allow the clothes to hang dry, and they are good to go!

Make Sunscreen Your Best Friend

It’s always good to have sunscreen on when in the sun, but when you’re out hiking or camping in the woods, sunscreen becomes crucial. Remember to put the sunscreen on before any mosquito repellent. This helps to maximize the effects of both the sunscreen and the mosquito repellent.

Wear Mosquito Repellent

There are many mosquito repellents available in the market, allowing you to choose from ingredients that suit your skin the best. You can also opt for natural mosquito repellents or make your own solution at home easily with a few elements that can easily be found in the kitchen. You can try consulting the experts who provide residential mosquito control services to learn which product is right for you.

Regardless of which repellent you decide to use, be sure to spray the repellent all over your face, front and back of neck, hands, wrists, feet, and ankles.

Check Yourself and Your Pet for Ticks

Ticks usually target areas of your body that are warm and moist. Once in contact, they can travel all around your body, but you should pay special attention to the armpits, behind the knees, scalp, and so on. In short, you must do a full-body check straight after you come indoors if you suspect you have been exposed to ticks. And the same goes for your pet.

If the infestation worsens, you might want to seek help from residential mosquito control services like Mosquito Sheriff.

Wear Light Colored Clothing

Darker or brighter colored clothing is more prone to attract bugs like mosquitoes and ticks. Try sticking to neutral or light shades as much as possible when you are out in the woods. The color of your clothing may not necessarily prevent you from getting bitten, but it will make it much harder for these critters to spot you.

Carry a Tick Remover

Most nature-love will find a tick attached to them or their pet at least once during their outdoor adventure. Plucking them off of your body may not be as easy as you may think; after all, they are attached to your skin. When packing for the trip, you may want to carry something that will help you safely remove the tick without breaking its head off under your skin. You may carry tweezers, but there is a higher risk of breaking off the tick’s head and releasing the potentially infectious fluids into your body. Hence, a tick remover is the most recommended.

Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn

As many of the experts who provide residential mosquito control services recommend, staying indoors at peak hours is the best way to save yourself from mosquitoes and ticks. Even though dusk and dawn are some of the most beautiful and peaceful times on the trail, you must stay in if you really want to avoid mosquitoes. Try staying indoors, in a tent, or covering up your arms and legs, particularly during these times.

Build Smudge Fires and Shelters

One of the best ways to drive away pesky critters is to make a smudge fire that will help to keep them afar. Similar to the effects of burning a citronella candle out in your backyard, you can build a smudge fire with any kind of moist woods that will put out a lot of smoke. Simply add the smudge woods on top of a fire that already has a good bed of coals and let it smolder. The bugs won’t come anywhere near you.

Final Thoughts

If you love spending time outdoors, don’t let the fear of getting bitten stop you from having your adventure. However, before you embark on your journey, do your research; you may want to consult the experts who provide residential mosquito control services near you. They can offer proper guidelines for you to follow during your trip.
