When setting up a home air conditioning and heating system, homeowners may be quick to opt for an HVAC system that requires plenty of ductwork throughout the household to make sure hot or cold air is properly flowing throughout the home.
However, for homeowners who want to avoid the tedious upkeep and complex installation of a traditional HVAC unit, ductless systems might be just what they're looking for.
What is a ductless system?
Where a traditional HVAC system relies on air ducts throughout a home to get heating and air conditioning into every room, a ductless system minimizes the effort in the installation that comes with traditional heating and cooling.
A ductless mini-split system is installed directly into the zones of the home that need A/C or heat. As many as four indoor units can be attached to a singular outdoor unit. These ductless systems contain a heat pump unit outdoors that contains a compressor, condenser, and fan, as well as a compact fan coil. Whereas ductwork and piping for a larger HVAC unit are much more complex, the wires and tubing for refrigerant in a ductless unit require a mere three-inch hole.
The Inner Workings
While a traditional system may be more appealing to some when installing central air systems, the truth is that ductless systems work great. These systems, also known as mini-splits, link individual room units to an outdoor compressor. The indoor unit contains evaporator coils cooled with refrigerant. Warm air from the room then blows over and is absorbed by these coils, transferring all that inside heat to the outdoor unit.
A mini-split system places small units directly into each room, which pulls in warm air and sends it back out as cold air. This system allows mini-splits to operate with heat pumps that can warm up a room as well as help to cool it down. Once the main unit is installed, homeowners can choose from various indoor options based on the zoning system within their household. This can include ceiling recessed, ceiling register, or floor mount mini-splits that can be designed with each room in mind.
With ductwork out of the picture, you can also prevent leaks that cause unwanted cold air or hot air to seep in during months that send you rushing to the thermostat to crank up the heat or the air conditioner.
Benefits of a Ductless Unit
For most homeowners, a ductless mini-split is actually a perfect solution that they may not be fully aware of. Installing a traditional heating and cooling system can require weeks to finish up, whereas ductless systems can sometimes be completely put in place by a technician in one day. These units also take up less space in your home, while minimizing the presence of allergens and dust that can be brought on by filters and ductwork not getting enough care.
Homeowners often find immediate savings in their monthly energy bills with a ductless system, as they require less power to operate than traditional HVAC units. The smaller size and zoning ability of ductless mini-splits also make them more energy efficient. Some of these mini-splits adhere to Energy Star guidelines that bring forth a greater solution to reducing your carbon footprint beyond the standards set forth by the U.S. government.

Whether it is for you personally or for your living space, make sure that you try and consider the cost. It is also important to try and consider the future, and how that would impact your health insurance and your home.
