How Often Should A Compressor Be Serviced?

Industrial equipment always needs to be in great shape, and air compressors are not an exception. You must stay ahead of the maintenance and service schedules so that there isn’t a chance of breakdown. When it comes to deciding the frequency of servicing, there isn’t a definite answer to the question. It boils down to several factors and the overall environment in which the equipment operates. Additionally, it makes sense to follow a predictive maintenance schedule to keep the compressor up and running and in a good condition at all times. Let us discuss the factors that determine the frequency and timing of compressor servicing.

Factors affecting servicing frequency

Air compressors perform different tasks, depending on the industries they are used in. Accordingly, some are exposed to more contaminants than others. For example, saws, drills, and paint sprayers in the construction industry generate large volumes of particulates. It makes them susceptible to clogging of filters and inlets. As these parts get clogged over time, the motor has to work harder, which can reduce its working life. Even for compressors performing contaminant-free tasks, environmental factors may be a problem. There could be contaminants around, rather than ones acting on the machinery. Pollen and grasses in a rural environment could be a factor for frequent compressor servicing needs.

Generic recommendations for air compressor servicing

When you use air compressors in your facility, you will have a clear view of the servicing frequency that works for you. Moreover, you can look for signs like oily guck coating or a thick film of dust over the machine because they indicate that service is due. Simple inspections can help you decide when the equipment needs service. Further, you must follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for servicing the Reciprocating Air Compressor, centrifugal compressor, or whichever type you use. You may follow a regular maintenance schedule regardless of the condition of the equipment. You can decide the schedule for service at a set interval, such as once every 12 months. Similarly, scheduling can be done based on hours. For example, you may opt for a 3,000-hour service between 6 and 9 months, depending on the activity level during the period.

Maintaining your air compressor over the years

If you run a compressor in a low contaminant environment, the maintenance requirement could be as infrequently as once in every two years. On the other hand, the highest level may be as little as every three months for high-use equipment in a high-contaminant setting. But you cannot take a cookie-cutter approach because you may have to scale services up or down according to the situation. However, it is important to be proactive about regular maintenance because it can prolong the life of the compressor and save your business from the massive repair or replacement expenses.

It is important to keep an eye on metrics such as fluid levels, error messages, and the physical appearance of the compressor, but you must have a reliable maintenance partner to keep it in the best condition. These professionals should be there on time for servicing and on-call when you need them in an emergency.
