A Beginner's Guide on How to Install an Air Compressor in Your Home Garage

June 28, 2021

With its wide range of uses in manufacturing, construction and even at home, air compressors have become highly popular. This machine can be used to clean tight spaces, inflate tyres and run different types of air tools. The good news is that such a handy tool is not just for mechanics and industrial facilities. An air compressor can also be set up in your garage, and it helps a lot in home maintenance and other applications in the house.

When setting up an air compressor, it should be done properly. Otherwise, the machine may overheat, explode and catch fire. It’s dangerous. If it’s your first time setting up an air compressor, this beginner’s guide will give you an idea of how to install it safely in your home garage. Keep reading and you'll find and learn the complete guide to fixing and maintaining an air compressor

1. Pick out the right compressor for your needs.

Before you can install an air compressor, you should have the right unit. In choosing the air compressor that best suits your work or project needs, you must first determine the requirements of your air tools. When you know these specifics, you can easily pick out the air compressor that satisfies what your air tools need. It should match your work requirements.

Some of the features you should consider checking out in an air compressor are as follows:

  • Horsepower rating
  • Cubic feet per minute
  • Air pressure
  • Tank sizes
  • Oil requirement
  • Duty cycle
  • Other tools and accessories

You should also think about its portability, the amount of space it will need and your power source.

2. Choose an area where your compressor will be installed.

An air compressor must be placed in a cool, dry, clean and well-ventilated part of your garage. It should be away from any dirt, vapour or volatile fume that may clog the unit’s valves and filter. The area should also have ambient temperature conditions, which may vary according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

3. Put on proper safety equipment.

It’s important to be safe when working with high-powered machinery like an air compressor. That’s why impact-resistant safety goggles and gloves are a must to protect your eyes from any possible flying debris and your hands in case the compressor blows up. You should also wear hearing protection to prevent any ear damage due to prolonged exposure to loud noise.

4. Secure the air compressor in position.

When your machine is ready, it’s time to install it in its designated area and lay down the plumbing framework. Make sure to use adequate hose lengths and fittings for the attachments. You can also use the buyer’s manual or the user guide to do a proper start-up and commissioning of the unit. The following are some of the procedures that must be done to secure your air compressor.

  • Use isolator pads to stabilise the machine and reduce noise from vibrations.
  • Check the air compressor’s oil level. The oil level must be at the desired level. To know what type of oil to use, check the user guide. It should also be noted that an air compressor and its tools must be lubricated regularly for proper functioning.
  • Install air filters. To make sure that your work is free from dust, debris, moisture or oil, use an air filter in your air compressor. This ensures smooth work and prevents clogging and the possible malfunctioning or shutting down of the unit. You should also add dryers or drain valves to protect against moisture and other fluids.
  • Look into the oil plug. Place the oil plug tightly after filling the air compressor with new oil. However, make sure not to mix it with any old oil. Drain it before filling it up with a new one.
  • Start the compressor. When all the previous steps are done, you can now plug your air compressor into an outlet and switch it on. As it’s turned on, it then starts to fill the tank.
  • Connect the air hose. Attach a small length of hose first. You can then figure out the length of the hose needed for each of your attachments using the user guide.
  • Attach the air tool.
  • Calibrate the regulator. The right pressure is needed in an air compressor for safety. Before you calibrate your unit, check if it is needed. If further changes are needed, you should read the user guide first.
  • Unplug the air compressor. After shutting your compressor down, wait for a while so it can cool down. This is important because the unit might overheat if used for a long time. After work with your compressor, you should drain the air and moisture from the tank so it will be ready for its next use.

Setting up an air compressor in your garage can be complex, but it can be done with proper guidance. A key to it is understanding the user guide. However, if you are not confident in doing it, then you should consider hiring professionals to install it for you.
