Professional Design Tips For Your Walk-in Wardrobe

June 17, 2021

When it comes to storage solutions, walk-in wardrobes are undoubtedly the best of the lot. This explains why they are the most expensive type of closet and why many homeowners find them desirable.

It’s worth noting that the accuracy of the wardrobe’s design impacts its stylishness and functionality. If you get the right design, you can transform your bedroom into a palace.

This article explores some professional design tips you can use when installing a custom wardrobe in your home.

Make Most of the Space

Since there are no restrictions when it comes to the design, it’s wise to make the most of your space.

First, ensure that the closet’s walls and doors run from the ceiling to the floor.

Then, install shelves above the doors and hanging rails. These can prove useful for storing accessories that you don’t use often, like hat boxes, special outfits, and so on.

You can also add closed cupboards to protect your most treasured garments.

Consider Lighting

Nothing is more frustrating than a closet that’s pitch dark on the inside. If that’s the case, you might find yourself wasting lots of time looking for particular clothes or shoes.

When designing a wardrobe, ensure that you can see what’s inside, whether day or night. Natural light can be useful during the day, but too much of it can cause your clothes to fade. Moreover, windows also take up precious storage space.

Ideally, your walk-in closet should have an artificial light source. Keep in mind that the positioning of these light fixtures is crucial.

It would be best to place it in the middle of your walk-in wardrobe so that you don’t cast a shadow on the shelves, hangers and drawers when looking for something to wear.

Another important consideration is the type of lighting you install.  Although they warm up your closet, incandescent bulbs are a potential fire hazard if installed in confined spaces. LED lamps are a much safer and long-lasting solution. They are also energy-efficient.

Organise by Type

Who says that you need a large room to construct a walk-in closet? Even if you live in a small house, you can own a custom wardrobe. The trick is to fully use all the avaialble square footage.

You can do this by organising your belongings by type.

For instance, you can install nooks for hanging jewellery and bags on one side. Then, build cabinets, shelves, and drawers for your garments and shoes.

A dressing table might also fit in well on the wall facing the entrance with a gorgeous pendant light hanging from the middle of the ceiling.

Install Corner Shelves

Interior décor experts can attest that styling corners is a challenging task. It’s even more complicated when dealing with walk-in wardrobes, as space is much more limited.

The best approach to make the most of the smaller space is to use corner shelves. Besides creating a seamless design, they provide additional storage space for your bags, purses, clothes and shoes.

However, some rooms don’t have enough space for freestanding corner shelves. If that’s your case, you can overlap the existing shelves. This ensures that you don’t waste any space.

You can store seasonal garments like raincoats in these hidden areas, even if they’re a little hard to reach on an everyday basis.

Install Hangers

Although drawers and shelves are integral components of any closet, they don’t serve the same purpose as hangers. To put this into perspective, think about your coats and jackets – would they fit perfectly in cabinets? No.

Ensure that your walk-in closet has enough hanging space for your longer garments. The recommended average height for hanging spaces is 2.2 meters, as this allows you to store clothes of all shapes and sizes.

You might also install some areas with two hanging racks, one on top of the other, for shorter items like shirts and skirts. The point is to maximise your space.
