Understanding Scientific Tools of the Trade

June 28, 2021

The life of a scientist or researcher revolves around the use of tools, gadgets, and gizmos. After all, you can't inspect bacteria without a powerful microscope, can you?

If you are interested in a career in the scientific research field, you're going to need to familiar with many different pieces of equipment. Or, if you just enjoy researching as a hobby, you can outfit your home or workshop with scientific tools and make your own personal discoveries.

Either way, it's time to start experimenting with the most common science tools so you can start understanding science at a deeper level. So what are the tools and methods you need to be comfortable with in order to become a scientist? Keep reading to find out now.

The Most Important Tool

One of the most common tools of the trade you are going to use is the microscope. Few things have revolutionized modern society like the discoveries made under the lens. There are many different types of microscopes, and many different qualities, depending on the type of research you plan to do.

Lab Accessories

If you are going to play around with different chemicals and compounds, there are a number of chemistry basics you'll want to have on hand as well. This includes glassware such as beakers, graduated cylinders, mixing bowls, test tubes, and so forth.

You'll also need accessories such as pipettes, scoops, mixing wands, droppers, burettes, and more. You'll want laboratory-grade scales for accurate measuring.

And you're probably going to need heating equipment as well. This can be a hot plate for simple boiling. Or it can be a bunsen burner for lab-specific tests. Make sure to have instant-read, digital thermometers as well.

And don't forget the personal protective equipment. Every good scientist and researcher is always outfitted with the proper safety gear.

This means thick, durable, protective lab coats. Use eye protection such as goggles or face shields. You'll also want gloves suited to the types of projects you will be working on. Different materials will protect against cuts, chemicals, cold, heat, and other elements you'll encounter in the research lab.

Specialized Scientific Tools

Depending on what you plan to research, you're going to need specialized gear as well. This may need to be customized machinery that you can craft yourself. Or you can work with a company like Cianflone Scientific to develop the tools and equipment you need to truly make remarkable discoveries.

If your primary purpose of research is for product design or innovation, consider getting a 3D printer, which will allow you to affordably and quickly create prototypes. 3D printers make it much easier to test products, rather than having to work with manufacturers for samples.

Determine Which Tools Your Field Requires

When it comes to a list of scientific tools, there's no end in sight. There are so many tools, accessories,s and gadgets used by scientists on a regular basis.

You'll want to determine the type of projects you plan to work on and get gear specifically suited to those tasks. Alternatively, you may be able to utilize public lab space at schools or other locations for your personal projects.
