7 Things to Remember While Packing and Shipping Heavy Products

Shipping products to far-away destinations has never been an easy task. However, modern times have introduced efficient methods that enable the smooth delivery of packages across the world quickly and safely. Nowadays, the biggest concerns have shifted to how rapidly the shipment can be made and how best to pack it for safe and easy shipping.

When it comes to large shipments, the difficulty is higher. Packing bulky and heavy items requires quality packaging and systematic handling. Heavy materials have a higher chance of being damaged than smaller objects, as the procedure of shipping is a complex one and features multiple stages that the item has to go through. In this article, we take an analytical look at 7 tips for packing and shipping heavy items.

Distribute the Weight Evenly

Depending on the number of items needed to be packed, a clear plan for the distribution of weight before attempting the packaging is essential. In the case of a large number of products, multiple boxes might be required. It is suggested that the objects be evenly spread out between the boxes for an approximately equal distribution of weight overall. On the other hand, a single container might be sufficient for delivering a smaller number of products. The same strategy of evenly distributing the weight of the products within the box is recommended here.

Use Packaging That Lasts

Packaging is arguably the most crucial aspect of the entire process. Despite a perfect weight distribution, fragile packaging can lead to disasters. It is almost impossible to predict the number of phases the package has to go through before finally reaching its final destination. Being dropped on the floor by handlers or vigorously bumping into hard surfaces when the aircraft hits turbulence are common occurrences that can potentially damage the packages.

We recommend you opt for sturdy cartons sealed with water-activated tape for packing heavy materials. Thermocol and cardboard are very thick packaging materials and can easily be used to pack large items for delivery. Added layers of shielding can be inserted over the internal walls of the carton box to safeguard the contents from external bumps. Once the products are safely inside, use filament tape to seal the box shut, as it is strong enough to withstand high levels of pressure from the inside and/or the outside. Using multiple boxes, one inside the other, is also effective in reducing damage from the outside.

Cushion the Contents Inside

After packing, securing, and loading the box to be used for the delivery, the contents inside need an added layer of security on top. Fill the empty spaces around the products with materials like X-pads that remain at a constant physical state despite changes in pressure around. This guarantees the items being delivered always remain cushioned and protected. Unless this is ensured, there remains a possibility for the products to become unstable during the delivery journey, which is a great risk.

Use Pallets

Based on weight requirements, pallets can be used for delivering large products. These substances are generally made of plastic or wood and are specially designed to withstand heavy pressure and still keep the contents secure. Pallets can be found in many hardware stores and can be used in any scenario involving the transportation of bulky goods.

Ensure the Contents are Static

Fragile materials do not take much to shatter into pieces, especially if they need to travel thousands of miles, through a variety of stations. Brittle objects, upon breaking, can cause harm to the other contents of the package as well. Hence, it is best advised to give the box a few gentle shakes after completing the packaging. If you hear clattering from the inside, re-packaging is recommended, as this proves the contents are not perfectly secure and have a possibility of breaking. Most carriers do not accept a rattling package as the chances of the contents shattering during transport are very high.

Label Your Packages

Influential brands have very renowned logos that they usually stamp on the packages intended for delivery. While this serves the purpose of securing the products in the container, it is also a strong form of brand marketing.

Although this does seem like an obvious step to take in any form of delivery service, a little tweak in the convention can make a big difference. Apart from the name of the recipient of the package and the destination address, additional information such as the nature of the contents inside and instructions for handling and opening can also be provided for a safer outcome. A detailed and descriptive label can go a long way in maintaining top-notch delivery services.

Place Protection Under the Seal

A protective layer should be placed underneath the seal of the package in order to ensure the contents do not get damaged while cutting the seal and opening the box. This layer can be made of scrap cardboard or a piece of thick clothing. Added protection can also be provided to the corners of the box by sealing them, or any other vulnerable portions, with tape.

A person ordering a large product accumulates lofty expectations from it. Depending on the nature, location, and availability of the item, delivery times and costs may vary greatly. However, it is unacceptable for most people if the contents are found damaged after having waited for months to receive the delivery. Large organizations have developed their product delivery services over the years. Even young entrepreneurs keep the packaging of their products as a top priority in their startups. Without bringing efficiency in this aspect of their businesses, customer satisfaction threatens to remain a myth.
