What is Powder Coating?

July 26, 2021

Powder coating products date back to as early as the 1940s. It replaces outdated and wasteful liquid coatings that are often harmful to the environment while still providing the required protection to keep the item working properly for years to come.

While powder coating has been around for almost a century, many people still don't know what it is. Keep reading to learn what powder coating is and what you can expect from powder coating services.

What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a type of dry finishing process that provides a protective finish to metal products. Its main purpose is to provide a steel or metal part with a high-quality, durable finish that more efficiently protects the product.

Powder coating is also often added as a decorative finish since its colors are limitless, and you can achieve almost any texture. You will be shocked by how often you come in contact with powder-coated products, such as:

  • Gates
  • Bike frames
  • Lawn furniture
  • Office chairs
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Tire rims
  • Medical utensils
  • Playground equipment
  • Electronic parts
  • Washer and dryer parts
  • Electric vehicle parts
  • Solar panels
  • Wind farms
  • Airplane wings

How Does Powder Coating Work?

The powder coating material is a polymer resin combined with pigments, curatives, and other additives and agents. The pigments have heat applied so they can melt together and then cooled, so it turns into a uniform powder that's similar to flour you bake with.

Then, the metal is grounded, and the powder is applied with an electrostatic stray gun that charges it, so it sticks to the metal part. Once the powder is attracted to the metal part, it goes through a heating oven that cures the powder to the metal. This essentially melts the powder on the metal part, creating a smooth and durable finish.

Other times you can powder coat an item by dipping it into a fluidized bed. Then, the part has heat applied and is submerged into the tank of charged powder. Then, the machine lifts the part from the tank, it may need extra heat to finish the cure, but this is great for parts that aren't large.

What's the Largest Object You Can Powder Coat?

The size of an item you can powder coat always depends on the size of the powder coating oven. Some companies can handle items as large as 40 feet wide by as long as 120 feet.

The best way to determine if your item can be powder coated is by reaching out to a powder coating company and ask them their maximum dimensions.

Start Powder Coating Now!

Now that you know what powder coating is, how it's applied, and what items you can powder coat, it's time for you to start protecting your metal today! Remember, you can powder coat various applications, and it's more environmentally friendly than traditional painting applications.
