Here’s How You Can Successfully Pull Off a Tech-Free Vacation

August 13, 2021

Technology has slowly but surely creeped into every aspect of our lives. From neverending mindless TikTok scrolling to navigating through weekly traffic, our dependence on technology is astonishing but inevitable.

Don’t get us wrong, technology and the internet have proved to be incredibly helpful. Need to sell off your old dresser? List it on Craigslist. Craving Dairy Queen? Get it delivered to your doorstep. Bored out of your mind? Binge watch a crime documentary on Netflix.

However, there is a fine line between using something for it’s functionality and being addicted to it. And we are increasingly moving towards the latter. If you are guilty of being obsessed with social media and your screen time is at an all-time high, it’s time for a much-needed digital detox.

But we don’t mean just uninstalling Instagram for a few days. Here’s a detailed guide to taking a tech-free vacation.

  1. Don’t Bring Any Tech (Except Your Phone)

Asking you to leave all your tech behind is not a realistic expectation. But do you really need a laptop, tablet, e-reader, iPad, and a smart speaker on vacation? No, you don’t. For this tech-free vacation, we suggest you only bring your phone and charger. Fewer devices will mean lesser temptation.

2. Uninstall Social Media

The next step is detoxifying your phone by uninstalling social media and any other apps that make up most of your screen time. Let’s be honest, the first few days without social media will be difficult. You will have this unstoppable muscle memory of tapping on the app and scrolling through. But you will get through it eventually.

3. Inform Everyone

Stepping away from social media and work contacts can be anxiety inducing. What if someone is trying to contact you for an emergency? To that we say, you’re not falling off the face of the planet! You’re just taking a well-served break.

But for your peace of mind, you should inform everyone, including your work colleagues that you are going on a vacation. And you would appreciate it if they didn’t contact you.

4. Pick an Activity-Filled Destination

Now that you don’t have Twitter threads to waste hours on, what will you do with all the extra time? It would be best to pick a destination that has a wide range of activities to offer. Also, it’s better to go on a beach vacation, where the pleasant weather will urge you to go outside. So don’t waste another second, go ahead and book Carolina Designs Vacation Rentals.

5. Prepare a Detailed Itinerary

Thoroughly research the destination to find fun activities and experiences. You should plan a detailed itinerary, so you don’t have any time to kill on your phone.

6. Set Screen Time Limit (& Stick to It)

Let’s be real, you are bound to go on the internet to find directions or make a reservation. But don’t use this as an excuse to get sucked back in. Set a daily screen time limit and stick to it.

7. Catch Up on Reading

Do you have a growing pile of books you want to read but never seem to find the time? Well, now is the perfect opportunity! Carry a couple of books and use this vacation to get back into reading.

8. Analog Photography

If you are a true social media addict, you will experience the itch to constantly upload Instagram Stories to show your followers your fabulous vacation. Instead, take a polaroid or disposable camera to capture memorable moments on your vacation. This is a great way to ensure you stay in the moment and don’t get caught up in filters and editing.

9. Try Old-School Communication

Instead of Snapchatting your friends, try old-school communication by sending them a hand-written postcard.
