How To Practice Good Hygiene And Cleanliness At Home

The health and safety of your family and children always start at home. Keeping your home clean and hygienic means you’re providing a safe environment for your family to live and grow.

A clean home also means the indoor air is fresher, the dust and dirt are lesser, and your home is free from the growth of bacteria and viruses. But it’s not only your home’s cleanliness that determines your family’s health quality.

Each family member’s hygiene practices can also affect their health and safety against dirt, bacteria, and potential viruses. Disinfecting and cleaning your home helps promote a healthy and safe living space, while good hygiene practices boost your family’s protection against environmental dirt and viruses. Looking after the cleanliness of your home is as important as taking care of your body. For your guide, here are some steps and tips to help you and your family practice good hygiene and maintain cleanliness at home:

  1. Always Wash Your Hands

One of the busiest body parts of humans is their hands. You use your hands everywhere and all the time. You use them to hold things, touch things, eat, prepare food, and clean your face or body.

At the same time, you also use your hands to pick up dirty items when you’re cleaning, disinfecting, or picking up trash and waste at home. As a result, your hands are bound to get dirty all the time.

Whether you’re using gloves or not when doing certain activities, always make it a habit to wash your hands thoroughly. After a thorough hand washing, it’s best if you also disinfected your hand with rubbing alcohol or with sanitizers, like this cactus sanitizer gel.

Remember that dirt and bacteria will not always be visible to your eyes, and sometimes, you can even get them from the everyday things you touch, like money and cellphones. So, remind everyone always to wash and disinfect their hands.

2. Clean Tables and Flat Surfaces After Use

You use your dining tables and coffee tables every day. You also use your kitchen countertops plenty of times when preparing your food or slicing some fruits or vegetables. Thus, it’s essential to clean your tables, countertops, and other flat surfaces immediately after use, especially if there are stains.

You can use a household cleaner or a natural one (vinegar and water) and a microfiber cloth to wipe down your flat furniture. This will prevent stains from being permanently stuck on these surfaces and attract pests, rodents, and bacteria.

3. Keep Your Sink Clear and Clean

Understandably, some people only wash their dishes at the end of the night, especially if they’re too busy with other responsibilities. However, leaving your dirty plates and dishes for longer periods might attract pests and rodents to invade your kitchen.

To avoid this, always practice clearing out your dishes and plates every after-meal and run them through your dishwasher or clean them with your hands. If the task seems overwhelming, you can always assign one family member to do the dishes each meal and take turns to divide the task.

4. Bathe Regularly

By regularly cleaning your home, it’s normal to accumulate dirt and grease in your own body. Thus, each of you must take a bath every day. Cleaning and bathing your body will wash away the dirt and dust you’ve collected from your surroundings and eliminate dead skin cells.

It’s ideal to take a shower at least twice or thrice a week. For days wherein you’re not scheduled to take a bath, you can take a half-wash wherein you only wash your face and body, excluding your head and hair.

5. Wear Clean Clothes

Your clothes are your body’s first line of defense from bacteria and dirt you may get from outdoor elements. So, as much as possible, strive to wear clean clothes every day.

If you’re soaked in sweat or dirt, make sure to change into new clothes immediately to avoid skin irritation that can lead to body odor. When your clothes are soiled or dirty, wash them on the same day or your scheduled laundry day and dry them immediately.

6. Clean The Floors

Dirt and spills can happen on your floors every now and then, especially if you have pets and kids in the house. To promote cleanliness, make it a habit to clean your floors by sweeping or vacuuming them every day. If you can’t manage to do this every day, strive to do this on interval days or once a week.

7. Encourage Everyone to Practice Proper Personal Hygiene

While everyone is doing their task to keep the house clean, make sure to remind them to look after their personal hygiene. Some of the proper personal hygiene that you and your family must practice may include:

  • Brushing and flossing your teeth
  • Trimming your nails
  • Getting enough sleep every night
  • Using deodorants and other body products to maintain personal cleanliness

The best way to encourage your family to follow proper hygiene religiously is by setting a good example and doing it yourself.
