Managing uncertainty in architectural projects

November 3, 2021

It is fair to say that for many uncertainty and construction projects go hand in hand. Schedules, both short and long-term, can change all too easily, orders for essential building materials can be cancelled with little notice and important information does not always get relayed. When you also add in unforeseen events like extreme weather conditions this uncertainty can be significant.

Despite the difficulties that can arise in construction projects it doesn’t need to be like this. Reductions in uncertainty are possible and is a project tame combines the elements of tools, processes, and people correctly then these issues can be resolved much faster.

This is why it is vital for project managers in this industry to use the appropriate construction specific tools. This means looking for ones that have specifically been designed with architecture in mind rather than more generic tools that are really only suitable for use in more basic projects. These tools will not only help you to track your progress but will also assist with communication. The right tools can help the busy project manager to spend significantly less of their day chasing up reports, attending meetings and even taking point in phone calls that are rather pointless.

Invest in the right tools

One thing you will learn from companies like Parallel Project Training is that there really is no substitute for investing in the right tools for your project. As a project manager in architecture these tools can help you stay on top of your planning (which should be 3-6 weeks ahead) and your main programme without the need to go out and seek updates. These tools have been designed to better understand the time sensitive nature of the construction / architecture industry and all of the delicate processes that are involved.

Admin workloads

Industry specific tools are also really important when it comes to admin workloads. Excessive paperwork is unfortunately something that is all too common on construction projects with all the relevant parties having no consistent way to report any progress and connect their updates with the masterplan.

Being able to keep an accurately keep track of all of your documentation is very important in case there is a claim that you may need to fight at a later date. Having to trawl back threw everything to find the one piece of evidence to support your claim can be exhausting but the right software can help to make this much easier. Being able to follow the paper trail effectively when it is incredibly complex is essential in this field.

Modernise, standardise

It doesn’t matter how large or small your project is, the majority of the processes that you will follow will be the same. Standardising your systems will offer you an opportunity that is unique and will increase any predictability whilst mitigating the risks with a much greater efficiency. Standardisation is not something that can happen overnight, it will take time however eventually with the right training courses for PMs you should be able to put these steps into practice and improve your project efficiency.
