5 Tips to Keep Your Plumbing System from Exploding This Fall

December 26, 2021

New homeowners are often told that winterizing their home's plumbing system is crucial to their place. However, it can be easy to neglect the need to prepare for the cold season ahead amid your daily struggles. And it's not something only tenants deal with; preparing a plumbing system for the winter is often the landlord's responsibility.

If possible, homeowners should winterize their pipes at the inception of the fall. However, if you have overlooked performing this vital task and now you are in the middle of a chilly winter, there is still some time for you to prevent the worst. Here are some practical techniques to keep your pipes from bursting. Let's take a look:

Seek Professional Assistance

Without the benefit of winterization, the plumbing system often faces problems like clogged drains and pipes. Additionally, the gutters and pipes clog because there might be grease or a solid buildup inside your drains, moving slowly through your pipes. However, with the assistance of a plumber, homeowners can remove these blockages, and your plumbing system can quickly return to normal. In addition, with the help of trusted professionals, you will keep your home protected throughout the winter season.

Turn on the Faucets

If the mercury has fallen below the freezing point and it plans to stay there, turning your faucets at the maximum capacity can keep water running through your pipes. Plus, it will slow down the freezing process, which your pipes are already going through. However, there is no need to waste gallons of water: Aim for only five drips in a minute.

Open Cabinet Doors

During fall, open every cabinet covering the plumbing in your kitchen or bathroom. It gives homes warm air to circulate better, further helping the exposed pipes from freezing. However, keep in mind that it won't help much with pipes hidden in walls, floors, and ceilings. It will still hold water running while limiting the dangerous effects of freezing climate.

Cover Your Pipes

If the pipes in your home are already on their way to freezing, covering them with warm towels might do the trick. First, you can try wrapping them with towels. And, then pour hot boiling water at them - make sure you wrap your pipes firmly. This way, it will be easier for you to cover them in hot towels. As a result, the ice frozen inside the pipes will start loosening up and will bring your system back to its normal state.

Take Out Your Hairdryer

A hairdryer can act as your savior when your pipes are freezing due to the cold weather. This tip will indeed work for you if the trick mentioned above is not working. If you have a heat gun, try blowing hot air directly on the frozen pipes with a hairdryer or better.

Note: Avoid using a blowtorch or anything that produces direct flames, as it can damage your frozen pipes and turn the whole problem into a big disaster.

To Sum it Up

For homeowners, the winter season brings a lot of problems. However, if you put extra care and attention into maintaining your plumbing systems, you can quickly avert these problems. The tips mentioned above will help you find the right way to deal with plumbing issues that emerge due to the cold season.
