Nathaniel Russell House: Historic Charlestown Townhouse

 Nathaniel Russell was a wealthy merchant and slave trader. He was born in 1738. Russell was originally a shipping merchant from Rhode Island. He dealt with rice, indigo, and cotton. He moved to South Carolina in 1765 to take advantage of the cities thriving seaport. Additionally, it was there that he became involved with the international slave trade. Furthermore, at age fifty he married his wife Sarah. The couple had two daughters. Furthermore, it was believed that he not only had his home built to show off his wealth. He also had hoped to find suitable marriages for his daughters. Additionally, from 1870-1905 the home served as a school for the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. Furthermore, in 1955, the Historic Charlestown Foundation purchased the home. They then turned it into a museum for the public. Check out the Nathaniel Russell house below.

 The house has an unknown number of bedrooms and bathrooms with over 1,400 square feet of space. The house features three main rooms per floor, each with a different geometric design. Furthermore, as you walk into the foyer you are greeted by an impressive spiraling staircase, surrounded by golden walls. Furthermore, the golden stairwell ascends all the way up to the third floor. Additionally, the house and grounds are separated by a wrought iron fence, with the entrance gate flanked by tall brick columns. The backyard homes the South garden. Additionally, the South garden features a formal English garden with gravel paths, boxwood hedges, and plants favored in the 19th century. The Nathaniel Russell House is located in Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston was founded in 1670. Originally named Charles Town, honoring King Charles II. Furthermore, in 2016 Travel + Leisure Magazine ranked Charleston as the best city in the world.
