Thomas Cole was an Anglo-American painter. He is known for his landscape and history paintings. Cole was born in 1801. He died of pleurisy in 1848. Cole emigrated with his family to the United States in 1818. He considered himself a self-taught painter. Additionally, he relied on books and studied the work of other artists. Furthermore, in 1830 he rented a small studio to paint, on a farm called Cedar Grove. It was there that he met his wife Maria. Maria was the niece of the homeowner. After the two were married they moved into the main home. Additionally, they went on to have five children together. Furthermore, their daughter, Emily, went on to become a botanical artist who worked in watercolor and painted porcelain. Additionally, Cole's sister, Sarah Cole, was also a landscape painter. Where did Thomas Cole live? The house has six bedrooms and one bathroom with over 5,000 square feet of space. This historic three-story brick-painted home was built in 1815. Today Cole’s home has become a historic landmark and museum, with tours given daily. Furthermore, there have been numerous renovations and reconstructions of the home over the years. Additionally, the first floor holds two large parlors, a library, as well as a staircase. Furthermore, the grounds have many walking paths made of loose gravel. This historic home turned museum is located in Catskill, New York. Catskill is a village in Greene County, New York. Greene County is a Republican county, although Catskill is slightly more liberal than the rest of Greene County's voters. Catskill is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter.
