Tips for Choosing the Best Work Truck

December 6, 2021

Not all work trucks are created equal. When you’re shopping for the best work truck, you have to think about what you’re using it for and what you need from your truck.

Rather than focusing on specific makes and models, it’s better to look at the weight class of your work truck and what to expect from that entire weight class. The weight class is not about how much the truck weighs, but instead about how much weight it can safely transport. A ½ ton truck can safely transport ½ a ton (1,000 pounds), a ¾ ton truck can safely transport ¾ of a ton (1,500 pounds), and a 1-ton truck can safely transport 1 ton (2,000 pounds).

The slightly confusing part about these rankings is that the classifications actually underrate the true payload potential for the trucks. Depending on the frame, suspension, brakes, and engine, the tow rating could be higher, but the rating still remains lower. While towing limits have improved, the classifications still remain.

Here are the basics of what you need to know about different types of trucks and how you can find the best heavy-duty work truck for your needs.

½ Ton Pickup

The ½ ton pickup class is made of light-duty or full-size pickups. This includes models like the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

A half-ton truck is a good entry-level heavy-duty construction truck because it is more affordable. It comes at a lower initial cost, is less expensive to maintain, and generally provides better fuel mileage than other heavy-duty trucks. For this reason, half-ton pickups are great options for owners who need a truck for both personal and light commercial duties.

Half-ton trucks have a small towing and payload capacity, which makes them not an ideal choice for serious or consistent heavy-duty work.

¾ Ton Pickup

The ¾ ton pickup class is often referred to as the “heavy-duty” pickup. These provide the same comfort and styles of the ½ ton pickup but offer enhanced towing and payload capacities. These include models like the Ford F-250, Ram 2500, GMC Sierra 2500, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500.

These trucks provide a heavy-duty design and typically more factory options than their ½ ton counterparts. If you are consistently towing and carrying daily loads of heavy materials, these are excellent options that will meet the needs of most contractors.

1 Ton Pickup

1-ton service body pickups or flatbeds are the most capable consumer-targeted trucks. Towing and hauling capacities are their top priorities, so they have additional features like dual rear wheels, trailer brakes, or larger engines. These include models like the Ford F-350, Ram 3500, GMC Sierra 3500 HD, and Chevrolet Silverado 3500.

These pickups are starting to get into the category of specialist pickup trucks, and you should consider exactly why and how often you are using them. A 1-ton pickup might not be the best investment for everybody, but it may be perfect for your needs.

Don’t Spin Your Wheels

So what is the best work truck? It depends on what you’re using it for. You need a truck that matches your needs.

For most people, a ½ ton truck is just fine for most of their towing needs. For independent contractors that require more materials and will consistently tow lighter loads, a ¾ ton truck is exactly what you need. It isn’t that often that a regular consumer has a true need for a 1-ton truck in their daily life. Instead, they may only need the capacity of a 1-ton truck a handful of times throughout the year.

Rather than making the investment of buying a heavy-duty truck that is only used to its full potential once or twice a year, renting a truck when you need it is a better solution. It helps you save money while still giving you access to higher towing capacity when you need it.
