Top Six Tips for Temporarily Fixing Leaky Pipes

December 27, 2021

Nothing can be more upsetting in your house than experiencing a leaky pipe late at night or during the holidays. It is a fact that plumbing emergencies rarely strike in the most convenient moments. Plumbing emergencies often cause confusion, which can lead to even more damages to your household items.

If you notice a leaky pipe in your house, don’t fret. Even as you contact your local plumber, there are several measures you can take to remedy the situation before the pro arrives. Read on to learn six actionable tips that can help you fix a leaky pipe in your house temporarily.

1.      Use Epoxy Putty

If you have a leaking cast-iron pipe in your house, use epoxy putty to patch it up. Epoxy putty is a versatile compound that is easy to use. These compounds are readily available in local stores at affordable prices. Before patching up a leaky pipe with epoxy, clean it up and allow it to dry. Then pick a chunk of epoxy and activate it by kneading the compounds together.

After preparing it, work the epoxy putty around the leaking areas. Give the putty at least one hour to cure and harden. You can test whether the area is leaking again by turning the water back on. If the pipe is still leaking, re-apply putty again. Depending on the size of the leak, always have your plumber advise you on whether replacing the leaky pipe is more appropriate.

2.      Use a Tape

Given the ever-rising cost of living, any idea to save a coin is always welcome. If you are experiencing a minor leak in your house, you can use duct tape, Teflon tape, and electrical tape, depending on the make of the pipe. Clear all water droplets on the surface of the leaky pipe you intend to fix temporarily.

The presence of water on a pipe weakens the seal. To ensure no spaces are left behind, flatten the tape after applying it to the pipe. Failure to effectively flatten the tape can result in water pockets formation. Taping a leaky pipe is an effective temporary fix that allows you to contact your 24-hour local plumbing in los angeles. In the event of serious leaks, call your local plumber immediately, even as you temporarily fix the leak.

3.      Utilize Pipe Clamps

A pipe clamp is an effective solution to minor leaks. Pipe clamps comprise a rubber pad on the inner side and metal sleeves. After identifying the leaking zone of the pipe, patch the opening by creating enough pressure on it. Always ensure that the inner tube adequately covers the leaking hole.

You can add a few extra inches around the leaking hole. A pipe clamp stops a leak within a few minutes, giving you ample time to contact your experienced technician. Have your local plumber fix the leaking pipe permanently, as pipe clamps are only temporary solutions. Don't assume the minor leak even after fixing it temporarily with a pipe clamp, as it may cause more plumbing problems afterward.

4.      Use a Wrench

Sometimes a leak can occur at a threaded joint. Use a wrench to tighten the leaking joint. The wrench may, at times, completely stop the leak. Even if the leak fails to stop completely, tightening the joint can slow the leak until your local plumber arrives.

Take precautions before tightening a joint to ensure it has no signs of welding. If welding signs are present, don’t try to tighten the joint. Call your local plumber immediately, as it requires a different set of plumbing skills.

5.      Utilize Repair Sleeves

If you notice a minor leak in your house, you can utilize repair sleeves. Repair sleeves are optimal for leakages around pipe joints. They are like pipe clamps, as they also have screws used to tighten the clamp around a pipe. You can get the repair sleeves from your local hardware store at affordable rates.

Always note the diameter of your pipe before going out to purchase one. This ensures you get the right sleeve clamp. After fixing the leaking pipe, don’t leave the repair sleeves for a prolonged period, as the leaky hole on the pipe may expand past the original state.

6.      Use Rubber Pipe Connectors

Rubber pipe connectors are suitable for leaks that occur around joints. In addition, they are also effective for leaks occurring in the middle of water piping. However, fixing a leaky pipe with rubber pipe connectors demands basic plumbing skills because it involves cutting pipes.

Fit the connectors correctly to avoid more plumbing problems and potential flooding. If a leak continues to occur even after fixing a rubber pipe connector, contact your local plumber immediately.

To avoid plumbing emergencies always catching you off-guard, you should schedule routine plumbing maintenance with your local plumbing professional. An expert can inspect the entire plumbing system and identify areas that need repairs.
