Making the conscious decision to lead a life that is more sustainable doesn’t have to cost the earth (literally), nor does it require a grand effort on our part. There are small, simple changes that we can make to our everyday lives that will help the environment.
These eco-friendly habits, if they are a collective global effort, can be the difference that our world needs to recover from the wrongs of our past. There are seven easy changes below that you can make that will ensure that you leave behind a thriving planet for your children and grandchildren.
1. Shop Sustainably
When doing your daily or weekly grocery shops, be more aware of what you are buying. By shopping from stores that choose not to oversupply plastics in the form of shopping bags or packaging, you will help make the environment a cleaner place.
Every piece of plastic that has ever been made still exists to this day. That is over 8 billion tons of plastic, with over 6 billion tons that have ended up in landfills and oceans around the world.
2. Stop Using Single-Use Plastics
Single-use plastics are some of the worst things ever to exist. Things like plastic cups, cutlery, and straws are some of the most overused items on the planet. If you think about it, each time you order a drink at a restaurant it arrives with a brand new straw.
If every person on each had to use just 10 straws a month, which would be 80 billion straws added to the landfills each month and almost a trillion added every year.
3. Buy a Travel Mug
Everyone needs their morning fix of coffee when heading to work or after dropping the kids off at school. No one is denying you this, nor should they. What you can do to make that morning luxury (some would say necessity) more sustainable would be to take a travel mug with you.
There are so many reusable travel mugs available in the most gorgeous designs, so there is no reason not to go green on this one.
4. Choose To Reuse
If every person on the planet had to make one simple change for the better, it should be to start using reusable products like cups, straws, and bags. You can buy reusable snack bags for many different reasons, and every one of those reasons would be valid.
This simple act can result in millions of single-use plastic bags not ending up in landfills and oceans around the globe. Some of them are even dishwasher and microwave proof, for added convenience.
5. Eat Less Meat
Eating less meat is crucial for a healthy body and an equally healthy environment. Meat is an important part of many cultures but people have become obsessed with it over the last few decades. It has reached a tipping point in many first-world countries where this mass production of meat products is making the planet sick.
Cattle farmers have cut millions of acres of forests down to make room for their livestock, not to mention the added contribution to greenhouse gasses. This doesn’t mean that you have to go “meat-free”, all it does mean is that you should think twice before ordering a burger.
6. Plant Vegetables
Vegetable gardens are a great way to grow your food and the only way that you can guarantee that no chemicals or pesticides are used in their production. Vegetables are notoriously loaded with chemicals to make them grow faster, be bigger, and look more vibrant and appealing.
All it takes is a little research to discover just how terrible these chemicals are for our bodies and our environment. Vegetable gardens are easy to start and even easier to maintain – all they need is a bit of love and attention from time to time.
Start a compost patch to reduce the impact of your wasted food. You can add eggshells, vegetable peelings, and other organic matter to your patch. Compost retains a lot of water which prevents soil erosion and plays a crucial role in establishing vegetation.
Composting reduces waste and makes us less dependent on landfills, and it also helps to decrease greenhouse gasses.
Going green might seem like a lot of effort, but you can start small by simply making these relatively minor adjustments to your current lifestyle.
