Waste Management Tips When Building Your Home

January 28, 2022

If you're like most people, you probably think of waste management as simply taking out the trash. However, there's much more waste to manage when building or renovating your home.

There are many things to think about when you're building a new home. How big should it be? What kind of materials should you use? How will you keep your yard looking nice? Sadly, waste management is easy to overlook, although it's one of the most critical aspects.

By following a few simple tips, you can help minimize the amount of waste created during your project and ensure that it's disposed of correctly.

Reuse Materials

One of the best waste management tips is to reuse materials whenever possible. If you're demolishing an old wall, for example, pull out any nails or screws and keep them on hand. Then, you can use them again when you start building your new walls.

If there are studs in the wall that need to be removed, you'll probably be able to use them again. Most lumberyards will even let you come behind their store and load up used lumber for free or at a reduced price.

While you're reusing wood, keep an eye out for old doors, windows, cabinets, and furniture that can be reused in your new home.

When you're done with your project, donate whatever leftover materials you have. If they don't want it, try asking around at other construction sites for people who might be able to use them.

Consider Renting a Dumpster

When it comes to larger, more permanent projects, a dumpster can be very helpful. Renting a dumpster is also a good choice if you know that your project will generate a lot of waste or if you're not sure what kinds of materials you'll be using.

If you opt for a dumpster, make sure to use it properly. O’Fallon, IL dumpster rental offers different sizes, including a 40-yard one for large projects. Follow all of the instructions listed by the rental company and make sure to fill up your bin no matter what size it is.

Recycle Wastes

As far as waste management is concerned, most construction wastes can be classified as recyclable. So while you don't need to sort through your garbage or remove nails from lumber, it does make a difference when it comes to disposal.

Not only will separated wastes help prevent environmental damage, but many recycling companies will pay for some types of recyclables. In addition, metal and plastic can generate some extra cash, which you can use to fund your next home improvement project.

Separate Hazardous Waste

Disposing of hazardous wastes the right way is important for your safety and the environment. But unfortunately, many people don't realize just how dangerous some common construction materials can be.

You should never mix hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos with anything else. They should also never be flushed down the drain or thrown in your trash can, even if they appear to be empty. If you find yourself with old paint cans, tile backer boards, insulation, or caulk, for instance, call your local hazardous waste disposal company and ask about the best way to get rid of them.
