What Lighting is Best for a Small Office?

January 18, 2022

Most people work in small offices. The quality and character of lighting in your office play a very important role when it comes to increasing your productivity.

People do not know that poor office lighting dampens their mood, impairs their working ability, produces headaches and eye strains, and has an effect on their energy.

In some instances, you might find that the location of your office makes it impossible for you to get natural light. In such cases, you can use artificial lights to ensure that there is enough illumination in your office.

If you walk into most offices, you will realize that they have installed ambient lighting with recessed and/or overhead lights. However, these lights are not enough to ensure that there is enough lighting in the office.

It is also important to note that with the correct lighting, you are going to affect the mood of your employees and create a conducive working environment for them. This is important when it comes to the performance of the company. Here is the best lighting for a small office.

Natural Light

The best lighting for a small office is natural light, something we can all get for free. There are many benefits of natural light, key among them the effect it has on our mood. So, what’s mood lighting, and what effect does it have on us?

Working under natural light for long hours stimulates the production of a chemical called serotonin by the brain. This chemical is known for its mood-enhancing characteristics.

This means that spending more time working under natural light produces more serotonin and enhances our mood to work more effectively.

In addition, natural light is important for our wellbeing and health. We should, therefore, make sure that we have adequate natural light in the office for our productivity, mood, and alertness.

Task Lighting

Some tasks that are considered to be focus intensive such as paper and computer work in the office require task lighting. This can be a light source that is well defined and dedicated to that particular task that you are handling.

In a small office, you can look for an articulated and adjustable desk lamp to ensure that you have light going to the right place or any place that you want it to go. This is essential in supporting the task one is handling and keeping their brains focused.

A small office might have several workstations. For instance, you might have a desk for phone and computer work, a meeting station, filing areas, and other workstations. You need to ensure that each of these workstations has a light source dedicated to them.

Decorative Lighting

Small offices will most likely have lighting for the entire office and task lighting dedicated to the different workstations that the office might have. Even though these types of lighting are very important, you might need to add some decorative lighting.

Decorative lighting helps when it comes to enhancing the character and beauty of a small office. It is used when adding interest and creating a mood in the office. For instance, you might add lighting to highlight certain areas or objects in the office.

In addition, you can also add accent lighting such as picture or mantel lights. This type of lighting, just like decorative lighting, makes sure that different elements and objects in the room are visible, making the office beautiful.

Even though some people might argue that this might make people in the office lose focus, decorative lighting is very important.

Temperature and Color Lighting

Finally, it is important to note that the temperature and color in your office have an effect on the productivity and health of your employees.

For instance, cool white and blue lights are considered to be the best types of lighting for concentration, working, and waking up while warm orange and yellow lights are good for unwinding and relaxing.

This shows that the color of the lighting in your office is going to affect the performance of your employees. You, therefore, need to ensure that you have the right color lighting.

In conclusion, you can use creative and fun ways to lighten up your office and create a conducive environment for your employees for them to perform better.

There are many ways of doing this, with one of the most important being office lighting. You not only need to make sure that your office has adequate lighting but also the right type of lighting.
