Why Cleaning Your Gutters is Way More Important Than You Think

January 10, 2022

As a homeowner, people love to take care of or decorate their houses. They paint the walls any color they like, take care of the lawn, clean the shed, or remove debris, spiderwebs, or stuck-on mud from the walls. But they often ignore an important aspect which is cleaning the gutters. I know this is far less fun than decorating your house and may seem like an insignificant task, but it is an essential task nonetheless.

Ideally, you should clean your gutters 2 times a year and make sure that it’s free of any unwanted material and working properly. If your gutter isn’t working right, it could potentially cause structural and safety problems for the building or house. If you don’t want to do it yourself or think that it is not something you’re capable of doing, then it’s best that you hire an expert or professional. Let’s discuss why it’s important that you carry out this task.

Stationary Water is Bad News

If gutters aren’t cleaned when recommended, they can get clogged and start storing up water. Making sure your gutters are cleaned can help them to function properly and direct the water to correctly flow away from the building. If the water starts accumulating, it can potentially overflow into surrounding areas and flood the basement or damage your home’s foundation.

Keeps Rodents Out of Your Life

An unclean or clogged gutter is a destination spot for small rodents like mice and rats. The uncleaned debris gives them an ideal condition to settle in the gutter and start a new home. Rodents usually exacerbate the issue by building nests. They are also notorious disease carriers and thus bring with them more problems.

Keeps Your Roof Intact

In the autumn season, leaves and debris accumulate in the gutter. If this junk isn’t cleaned and removed continuously, it can cause some major structural problems. Furthermore, in the winters, when it starts snowing, the clogged gutter will act like a bathtub plug and will prevent the accumulated snow, ice, and water from flowing away. This will produce a lot of dead weight on the roof of your house and can ultimately damage it.

Saves You Money in the Long Term

Pretending to not notice an overflowing gutter or avoiding cleaning it may sound easy at times, but if you leave it like it is for too long it can cause problems that can come with quite the cost. Cleaning your gutters or hiring professionals to clean your gutters is a pretty simple task, but if you allow too much time, it might be too late. For example, if the unclogged gutter accumulates a lot of water which damages your building’s foundation, it isn’t something a professional gutter cleaner will be able to fix. You might have to get involved in a lot more mess than you can handle.

Conclusion

Cleaning your gutters is a crucial part of being a homeowner. A little laziness can cost you a lot of cash. You might leave it for another day but there will come a time when you’ll wish you had taken care of it. Uncleaned gutters can get clogged and ultimately damage your soil, your house or even cause dangerous diseases to be spread amongst your family. It’s best to stay away from all the hassle and hire professionals to handle it for you because there is always a possibility that cleaning it all by yourself is not your piece of cake.
