Homeowners have different types of home repairs to worry about from time to time. This is important in making sure that their homes have no problems.
When it comes to replacing shower door seals and sweeps, most of them hire a person to replace them not knowing that this is something that they can do on their own.
Replacing shower door sweeps and seals should be done every few years. It helps when preventing water puddles from forming on the floor of your bathroom. With time, the sealed plastic gets brittle and discolored and does not do its work like it used to.
Some people might even want to replace them when they realize that they (the seals) have a mildew cover and look old. Mildew is quite difficult to clean.
However, should you hire a person to do this for you? No, you should not. You can even install the entire shower door on your own.
Well, the truth is that this is an easy and cheap problem for you to fix on your own as long as you have the right equipment. Within half an hour, you will be done with the job. Here are the steps you can follow to replace your shower door sweeps and seals.
Before you start replacing shower door sweeps and seals, you need to have the right equipment as well as sweeps and seals. Shower door seals and sweeps can be bought online for a very cheap price, as long as you understand what your bathroom needs.
Before you start removing the old shower door sweeps and seals, you need to identify the type and size that you currently have.
For instance, you need to make sure that you know your shower door thickness - most of them range between half an inch, a quarter of an inch, and ⅜ of an inch. You will also need to know the thickness of the bottom seal. Most bottom seals measure about forty inches.
After making sure that you know the size and type of your shower door seal, you can now go ahead and remove it.
Those that have a vinyl seal or a slide on one can remove the seal by simply pulling it down. This will remove the seal. Do not be surprised if you have to apply some force or use a tool especially if the seal is stuck.
The other types of shower door seals are different. You cannot remove them by pulling them off. Instead, you will have to first remove the screws that hold the seal using a certain tool. After removing the screws, the door seal can be pulled out.
Now that you have removed the seal, you need to ensure that the glass is clean since you might find debris and gunk holding onto it. You can use a household cleaner or rubbing alcohol for cleaning.
After cleaning the glass, you need to cut the seal to the right measurements that you obtained in the first step.
Even though you have the measurements, you can also place the seal on the door to see where you need to cut and to make sure that it fits correctly.
After cutting the seal, you will need to make sure that it is clean. Even though the cut surface might be clean, it might not be smooth. You might need to use something like a knife to soften the surfaces.
You can now insert the seal into the shower door. Depending on the type of shower door seal that you have, you will need to use the same process you used when removing the shower door seal. This is discussed in the second step above.
Finally, you need to test whether your door fits in well like before. To do this, make sure that you open and close the door severally to see how it works. If you cut the seal too long or short, you might have problems that will need to be fixed.
As discussed above, this is an easy task that you can do on your own and save money that you would have used hiring a person to do the job for you.
