Emily Dickinson House: Landmark Amherst Museum

Emily Dickinson was an American poet. She was born on December 10th, 1830. She had a brother named Austin, and a sister named Lavinia. Dickinson lived most of her life in isolation. Many of Emily’s poems dealt with themes of death and immortality. Furthermore, after her death in 1886, Lavinia found her cache of poems hidden in her bedroom. Her first collection of poetry was published in 1890. Emily suffered from headaches and nausea, as well as difficulty breathing. This has led researchers to believe she died from heart failure induced by high blood pressure. She died on May 15, 1886. The house has an unknown number of bedrooms and bathrooms with over 6,000 square feet of space. The Dickinson Home was built in 1813. In 1899 Austin's daughter Martha Dickinson Bianchi inherited the home. Furthermore, she rented the home to tenants until 1916. In 1963 the house was designated a National Historic Landmark. The home began as a Federal-style house. Furthermore, it was the first brick house in Amherst. Additionally, the exterior of the home has undergone many paint and renovation changes. Most recently, in 2004 it was repainted in its late-nineteenth-century colors to show it as Emily Dickinson knew it. The home features a beautiful front porch as well as a two-chimney fireplace. Additionally, there are many windows that line both of the stories. The Emily Dickinson Museum is located in Amherst, MA. Furthermore, is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
