Heyward-Washington House: Historic Museum

Heyward-Washington House is a historic house museum. The house gets its name because George Washington would often stay there during his visits to Charleston. It was built in 1772 by Thomas Heyward Jr. He studied law in England. Heyward was a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1775 he was the last delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence. Additionally, in 1778 he served as a judge in South Carolina. He retired in 1798. Heyward was a patriot leader and artillery officer with the South Carolina militia during the American Revolutionary War. He died on March 6, 1809. The house has four bedrooms and an unknown amount of bathrooms with over 6,000 square feet of space. This is a three-story double brick house. It was built in 1772 by Thomas Heyward, Jr. It was common during this time to build houses upwards rather than expanding horizontally, to save space. The house features twelve rooms in total. Additionally, the second floor features a drawing-room. It also has a smaller withdrawing room. There is also a card room, a reception room to entertain guests, a kitchen and a dining room. Many of the rooms have their own coal-burning fireplaces. In 1929 it was saved from deconstruction and turned into a museum. This historic home is located in Charleston, SC. Furthermore, the population is 135,257. It is famous for its history.
