Joseph Manigault was a rice planter and merchant during the 18th century. He was born in Charleston, SC. He lived from 1763 until his death in 1843. His father, Peter Manigault, was an attorney and plantation owner. Additionally, Peter was also the wealthiest man in the British North American colonies. His mother was Elizabeth Wragg. She was the daughter of politician Joseph Wragg. Joseph also had a brother and two sisters. His brother Gabriel was an architect. The Manigualt family’s net worth would amount to $4 million today. Joseph was married twice. His first wife, Maria, died after three years of marriage. His second wife was Charlotte Drayton. Furthermore, Joseph had seven children. He died at the age of 79. This historic Charleston home was built in 1803 by Joseph’s brother, Gabriel Manigault. Gabriel studied architecture in London before the American Revolutionary War.  Additionally, the three-story home is made of classic brick. The front of the home has a two-story porch across the center three bays. There is a semicircular stairwell that sits in the middle of the home. Furthermore, the interior features delicately refined woodwork. There are several fireplaces throughout. The home was donated to the Charleston Museum in the 1930s. Additionally, it is open daily to the public for tours. The home museum is located in Charleston, SC. There is a population of 135,257.
