Most Common Air Conditioning Problems

February 28, 2022

Since summers in Australia are still in full swing, you don't want your air conditioner to break down and leave you sweating in the sweltering heat. Your air conditioning, like any other machine, is prone to failure. However, if you take proper care and ensure timely maintenance through air conditioning service, you may prevent this.

Even routine maintenance, unfortunately, cannot guarantee the efficient operation of your air conditioning system. And, if your machine has become obsolete, it is better to get a new air conditioner installation that will not interfere with your comfort in this heat. However, if your ac is relatively new and well-maintained, you should be on the lookout for these indicators, which will assist you in adopting early preventative actions to keep your unit from fully breaking down.

1. The Air Conditioner Is Not Working

When your air conditioner isn't working or turning on, you should check the batteries in your thermostat. If the batteries are dead, replace them. If the batteries are in good working order, check the thermostat settings to see if the cooling mode is on with the required temperature settings. Check the circuit breaker if your thermostat is switched on but your air conditioner is still not working. Your air conditioner will not turn on if the circuit breaker is tripped. Turn off and then back on the circuit breaker to reset it.

2. Noises From The Air Conditioner

Depending on the sort of problem, an air conditioner might produce a variety of noises. There are a number of reasons why your air conditioner is producing strange noises:

  • A refrigerant leak can cause a hissing sound.
  • You may have a relay problem if you hear clicking sounds when turning on and off your air conditioner.
  • Noises such as thudding, rattling, or pounding indicate a problem with the blower or motor assembly.
  • A screaming noise is produced by the compressor or fan motor.
  • Faulty electrical components cause a buzzing sound.

3. Leak Of Air Conditioning Refrigerant

When the coolant in your air conditioner begins to leak, the temperature fluctuates and the device fails to work properly. Leaks of refrigerant can cause:

  • Ineffectiveness
  • Power usage is high.
  • Freezing of coils
  • Compressor failure
  • Inconsistent cooling
  • Inspect your air conditioner for refrigerant leaks on a regular basis.

4. Evaporator Coil Frozen

When your air conditioner does not receive enough air to operate, the evaporator coil freezes. A frozen evaporator coil can cause your air conditioner to freeze and stop operating. Inadequate airflow in the system might be caused by blocked vents and ducts, filthy filters, or a broken fan. A clean air filter is essential for optimising circulation and indoor air quality.

5. Water Leak From Outside Air Conditioner

Water pouring outside from your air conditioner on a hot or humid day, especially when the machine is running, is common. It is also usual if the water leak happens outside in chilly weather with a temperature of 60 degrees or less, as the unit might freeze and leak water when it melts. Other causes of your air conditioner leaking outside include:

  • Clogged air filters
  • Incorrect installation
  • Drainage pipe clog
  • Low amounts of coolant
  • Condensate pan shattered

6. Problem With Drainage

Dust, algae, and debris can clog the drain pipes as well. Mold, fungus, and mildew can grow if water does not drain correctly. Gases and foul odours might also enter your house. To avoid this, make sure your drain line is maintained, cleaned, and examined on a regular basis. Air conditioners that are not levelly placed may not drain correctly.

These are just a few warning signals that you should be on the lookout for. If you notice any additional issues with your HVAC system or air conditioner, it is recommended to call specialists who can help you.
