Thomas Wolfe House: Childhood Asheville Home

Thomas Wolfe was an American novelist of the early 20th century. He was born in Asheville, North Carolina on October 3rd, 1900. He is one of the first masters of autobiographical fiction. Additionally, his work has influenced the Beat Generation of writers such as Jack Kerouac, Ray Bradbury, and Philip Roth. Furthermore, Hunter S. Thompson credits Wolfe for his famous phrase "Fear and Loathing". His books were written and published between the 1920s and the 1940s. They vividly reflected American culture during that time through the hyper-analytical perspective of Wolfe. Additionally, some of Wolfe’s famous novels include Look Homeward, Angel, and Of Time and the River. Wolfe died in 1938 of miliary tuberculosis. Check out the Thomas Wolfe house below.

The house has an unknown number of bedrooms and bathrooms with over 6,000 square feet of space. This Queen Anne-influenced house was built in 1883. There were only six or seven rooms. Furthermore, by 1889 several additions were made to the house, nearly doubling the size. In 1916, the home was updated to add electricity and additional indoor plumbing. Today there is a total of 29 rooms that make up the home. Furthermore, the home features multiple working fireplaces. There are also a couple of bay windows, and a quaint front porch. There is also an intimate balcony on the second level. Additionally, there is also a sun-parlor. The home is now a museum. It is also a historical landmark. It is located in Asheville, North Carolina. Furthermore, Asheville is a city in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains.
