Different Types of Water Damage Cleanup

March 28, 2022

Water damage is one of the easiest and most common disasters that homeowners may face. The only way to fully prevent damages caused by water in a home or office is to have them inspected, cleaned up, and dried out as soon as possible after they happen. This will help them avoid future problems with their building's structure. On top of this, if they are planning on selling their house soon, it would be best to inspect it before putting it on the market. Some damage can never really be repaired, regardless of how long they wait to fix it. Here are different types of water damage cleanup.

  • Category 1 or Clean water

This type of water has no harmful chemicals and is clear and colorless. It is usually not as hot or cold as other categories, making cleaning it easier than other kinds of moisture. The water does not contain any solid matter, such as dirt, so mop it up using a wet rag (no soap). If the area is small, like a cupboard, one should use a towel soaked with vinegar to remove the stain left behind by the water. They should use a garden hose in larger areas and spray the spot until all excess water evaporates. Don't worry about mold growing on furniture that was wet for more than two hours, as it won't harm anybody unless the surface is already moldy. One can also try some dry air purifiers or fans near the affected area to help clean the air inside their property. This helps to eliminate bad smells that come from damp or wet places. After the affected area is completely dried, seal it to protect it from future moisture and stains. If there's still mildew on the carpet or paint, apply bleach to kill off germs. Do it once every six months or once per year, depending on how much they use their carpets or paint.

  • Category 2 or Greywater

Greywater contains pollutants and bacteria from kitchen sinks, showers, and washing machines. A sink drain should be connected to the garbage disposal unit so that the waste doesn't collect and overflow into the soil surrounding the house. Greener homes are better because they aren't releasing toxins and polluting earthworms and fish, but greywater is useful too. Use it to irrigate gardens, wash fruits and vegetables, and flush toilets without letting the wastewater flow into the sewer system. This kind of water often takes longer to dry than regular tap water, and they will need to find the Columbia water damage cleanup company to hire for proper cleanup. They will know how to deal with the waste safely and securely. While scrubbing the floors at home, try to wear gloves or socks to avoid spreading germs around. They should ensure that they dispose of the used rags properly without leaving them lying around the house.

  • Category 3 or Blackwater

Blackwater is dark and dirty water containing various contaminants and particles once present in the pipe. These items include oil, grease, sludge, feces, and even dead animals. Blackwater can seep through cracks and holes in the ground, especially during heavy downpours, for those who have broken their pipes due to clogged drains or leaks. This causes flooding in yards and driveways. Even though it seems messy, it's very easy to handle. Just call a plumber to get rid of these wastes safely. Using a vacuum cleaner, sweep up debris immediately or when it dries up. They can also use bleach-soaked cloths to wipe out excess oils and fats that might linger for quite some time. However, a professional company will be able to extract all of the substances that they cannot take care of themselves.

All three types of water require different methods and materials to clean them efficiently. With the right tools and skills, anyone can clean up their property whenever necessary. Contact their local plumbers and ask for recommendations and tips before choosing one to prevent further contamination and damage. Remember that this process can only be completed if they are well equipped and experienced enough.
