Everything you Need to Know About Airline Points Schemes

March 24, 2022

If you are a frequent flyer, you must be familiar with some of the reward programs run by different airlines. Frequent flier programs reward loyal customers for the miles flown on a particular airline. The most common reward is free miles which can sum up to free flight tickets or discounts. Other rewards include free baggage and exclusive lounge access.

The reward system used on frequent flier programs varies. Therefore, it's essential to enrol in a program that will offer the most significant benefits. Frequent fliers might be more inclined to choose programs operated by an airline that covers their destination and allows the consolidation of miles. However, if you are an infrequent flier, programs that will enable members to earn points from non-flight activities will be the most advantageous.

Here is a closer look at some of the programs and everything you need to know about airline points schemes.

Miles and More

This is among the most popular loyalty programs run by Lufthansa and Swiss Air, members of Star Alliance, the largest air alliance globally. Other airlines like Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Air Canada also use the scheme.

Miles and More has three-tier membership:

Frequent Flier

Members need at least 35,000 status miles or 30 flights to enjoy perks like free baggage allowance and priority check-in.

Senator

Membership requires 100,000 status miles, and some of the benefits include first-class check-in and free baggage.

HON Circle

HON Circle is the top tier membership of the Miles and Miles scheme and requires at least 600,000 status miles over two consecutive calendar years. Some of the best benefits you can enjoy as a member include exclusive limousine and transfer services on both arrival and departure.

Finnair Plus

This is the frequent flier program for Finnair, and membership consists of four tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Lumo. If you want to be a member, the minimum requirement is 30,000 points or 20 flights in a year.

Unlike other schemes, Finnair Plus has lifetime tiers, Gold and Platinum. These cannot be downgraded once you are a member.

Some perks you will enjoy as a member of Finnair Plus include priority check-in, free baggage allowances, lounge access and upgrades for family members. The benefits are accorded depending on your membership status.

Qantas Frequent Flier

Qantas is the biggest airline group in Australia, and it operates a unique frequent flier program.

As a frequent flier, you can collect points from miles, hotels, car hire, fuel fill-ups and energy bills. Membership comes in four tiers: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum One. However, if you accrue enough points, you can earn elite status in each tier.

Elite status allows members to enjoy priority phone service, preferred seating, priority check-in, first-class lounge access, and complimentary lounge invitations. However, these benefits are offered according to the membership status.

Cathay Pacific Frequent Flier Programs

Cathay Pacific has two primary frequent flier schemes; Asia Miles and Marco Polo Club. Both schemes offer unique benefits at different tiers.

If you become a member, you will be able to enjoy everything from flight upgrades, discounts on hotel reservations and merchandise to international dining experiences and deals on spas.

Airline schemes have numerous frequent flier programs. You only need to settle on one that works for you.
