Polyurethane Sealants

Polyurethane is a substance that is created when the organic compounds isocyanate and glycol come together. Polyurethane sealants are the result of this chemical reaction, but they come in several different forms. Some are better suited for all-purpose applications, while others are UV-resistant or nonstaining. Walking down the aisle with sealants in your local hardware store, you’ll notice a wide selection of specialty polyurethane sealants. Some polyurethane options like sika 291 sealant are favorites for marine uses. Polyurethane sealants are useful for more than just functional purposes. They can also be used aesthetically to hide minor imperfections and highlight or blend into certain features. If you’re interested in using this type of sealant on HVAC projects or automobiles, you’ll likely want a sealant that has less flexibility.

When you use polyurethane sealants, you can expect them to be corrosion and moisture-resistant, heavy-duty, long-lasting, flexible, chemical resistant and so much more. It can be applied in a variety of ways to accommodate the material it is being applied to. Polyurethane sealants are often sold in 10-ounce tubes for easy application using a caulking gun, but they can also be pressed, layered, sprayed, and brushed onto a variety of surfaces. They are typically waterproof and can be applied to most surfaces effectively. Just make sure that you read the labeling to ensure that it is the correct sealant for the task you have in mind.

Polyurethane as a Bonding Agent

This versatile substance can also be used to bond materials together. Low modulus polyurethane is necessary for using it as a bonding agent. It is strong enough to even bond sheet metal joints. Before using it to bond materials, surfaces need to be clean, dry, and free from debris. It bonds so well that it can keep out just about any natural element like water, land, air, insects, and more. They even come in different colors so that your project will look just as you need it to. It can be applied to wood, metal, plastics, vinyl, and many other materials.

Because there are so many variations of sealants, it is important that you read the labels carefully to ensure that you’re choosing the right sealant for the job. Whether you’re doing some remodeling around the house or working on an industrial build, polyurethane sealants can save the day.
