Tips to Clean a Blocked Drain

March 8, 2022

One of the most typical reasons for contacting a plumber is a clogged drain. Blocked drains in eastern suburbs are the core cause of a wide range of small issues, from bad odours to water that just won't drain. However, if these problems are allowed to worsen, life may rapidly become a nightmare.

The good news is that if you believe you have a blocked drain in Sydney, you may be able to clean it yourself. Untreated blockages can cause water to spill from your drains, potentially causing damage to your house or company. Severe obstructions can also cause burst pipes, which might necessitate much more expensive repairs.

Here are the basic solutions for clearing blocked drains that are accessible to you.

1. Boiling Water

Pouring a saucepan of boiling water down the drain is a quick and easy treatment for clogged drains. In many circumstances, this is sufficient to loosen or dissolve the obstruction without the need for more radical procedures. Be careful to only use this approach on metal or ceramic pipes, as heat can cause PVC pipe joints to loosen. Instead, use hot, not boiling, tap water for PVC pipes. This procedure may be good for removing oil or food buildup, but it is unlikely to be efficient for removing solid clogs.

2. Natural Cleaner Made At Home

By mixing bicarb soda (baking soda) and white vinegar, you can produce your own in-house drain cleaning solution. Pour the bicarb first, followed by the vinegar. Cover the drain to prevent the mixture from gushing out of the pipe. The chemical reaction between bicarb and vinegar produces oxygen, which scours and cleans the interior of the pipes. You may need to repeat the technique numerous times to thoroughly eliminate the impediment. Once the mixture has gone past the obstacle, flush your pipes with hot water to remove any remaining residue.

3. Cleaner With Caustic

Caustic chemical drain cleaners are available at your local hardware shop or supermarket. These chemicals can dissolve oil, hair, food, and other typical clogs. They are, however, hazardous to the environment and should be handled with caution. Caustic cleaners are ineffective on solid masses such as tree roots or tiny household objects. When working with chemical cleaners, always cover your hands and face, and flush your pipes with water afterwards to remove any leftover chemicals.

4. Plunger

A plunger can be used to unclog a clogged drain or a clogged toilet. Before you begin plunging, cap any overflow spouts to ensure a solid seal. The plunger's up-and-down pressure can assist to release any obstructions, allowing your pipes to flow smoothly again. Plunging is most efficient for solid obstructions, however, it is ineffective against grease buildup and mineral deposits.

5. A Snake And A CCTV

For more serious obstructions, use a plumber's snake or electric eel tool. The revolving coil at the cable's end rotates quickly, chipping away at the blockage until it is removed. Since snakes have a limited range, the obstruction must be near the drain's entrance for them to be effective. They may also cause pipe damage, therefore it is best to explore alternate methods first. Plumbers' snakes are available in most hardware stores, or you may hire a qualified plumber to handle the work for you.

We hope the preceding suggestions help you clean your clogged drain. However, if you are still unable to resolve the problem on your own, it is always preferable to contact a professional or experienced blocked drain repair in Sydney. They are the go-to option if you can't figure out the problem or get rid of the bad odour. It is also a practical solution if you do not have enough time to do the task on your own.

  1. Thanks for the tip of using a plunger and cleaning your drain since the pressure it produces agitates the clogs that might be present. But I would understand how getting plumbing services to do this can also be beneficial. This is especially if there are more underlying conditions that need to be addressed.
