For singer/actor Troye Sivan, it’s a joy to be back home in Australia. After five years in the U.S., primarily in the Los Angeles area, Sivan purchased his historic property in Melbourne in 2020. While he still maintains his L.A. home, a former Carlton brick factory is now the pop sensation’s primary residence. Check out Troye Sivan's house.
Despite being only 26 years old, Sivan is a Renaissance man for the 21st century — In 2014, Sivan was named one of Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential Teens,” and his global reach has greatly expanded since that time. The Star Search finalist and songwriter is also an acclaimed actor, with roles in major Hollywood films including X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Sivan is also the son of a successful real estate agent and entrepreneur, giving him an edge when it comes to architecture and design. To Sivan, his home doubles as his sanctuary, and it’s the one place where he can truly be himself. Therefore, virtually every aspect of the property’s redesign came from Sivan himself, from the relaxing color scheme to the tranquil outdoor space that’s perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
Of course, Sivan had a little help, partnering with Flack Studio to help transform the Victorian-era property into a modern oasis, where interior and exterior design elements coexist in dramatic yet simple fashion. Sivan believes that “nobody looks good” in harsh lighting, thus retro lamps throughout the interior create soft, welcoming lighting aspects. In the star’s third-floor bedroom, the maroon lighting feels much like a “really nice warm hug,” according to Sivan himself.
Sivan’s love for his new home is abundantly clear. Throughout the YouTube tour of his home, Sivan declares several areas of the house to be his “favorite,” including the kitchen, which features cool metal walls mingling with solid wood counters, and his sister’s second-floor bathroom. The sister in question is Sage Mellet, an influencer and rising star in her own right.
Although Sivan was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the singer and his three siblings (including Sage) spent their childhood in Perth, Western Australia. As such, Sivan feels most at home when he’s Down Under and believes that moving back to Australia has done wonders for his mental health. In his Melbourne oasis, Sivan exists far from the hectic stress of Los Angeles while being closer to family.
According to mental health experts, being close to family and living in a slow-paced suburb can boost your overall happiness and wellbeing. So, when choosing the best place to live for your mental health, consider taking a page from Sivan’s book, and cultivate the life you’ve always wanted. For example, do you crave the hustle and bustle of city life? Are you looking for a community that’s laid back and pet-friendly? Is a neighborhood’s historical value an important consideration for you and your family?
For his part, Sivan truly appreciates the interesting history of his property. The tranquil courtyard where Sivan spends much of his time was a handball court, erected in 1874. Subsequently, the property housed a brick factory in 1950 and was then turned into a private residence some 20 years later, as the home of renowned architect John Mockridge.
Mockridge preserved much of the building’s original features, a tradition carried on by Sivan. For starters, the house retains its original cork ceiling tiles, stained over time, and its brick exterior is largely untouched.
To Victorian architects, a building’s exterior facade was just as important as its interior and just as elaborate. Sivan keeps that tradition alive in many respects, beginning in the courtyard itself, full of native Australian plants including a full-size eucalyptus. Yet another favorite part of his home, the courtyard is fully enclosed and the perfect place for outdoor relaxation.
During Zoom calls, you’re more likely to find Sivan in his bedroom than the courtyard. If you’re excited about the idea of working from the comfort of an outdoor oasis, however, it’s relatively simple to build an outdoor office space. Like Sivan, you should start by considering the space at hand, and working with the natural landscape rather than against it.
