Do All Mattresses Come Free Of Harmful Chemicals?

May 17, 2022

If you find that you’re waking up with a scratchy throat, runny nose, and sore eyes, you might want to stop blaming hay fever. The culprit could actually be your mattress. Chemicals are added to mattresses in order for them to adhere to strict health and safety guidelines. Most of the time, the chemicals come in the form of fire retardants and although they’re essential in a worst-case scenario, they can cause problems for some people. Sleeping on an organic mattress is a great way to protect the environment and your health. So if you want to know more about your mattress and the chemicals it may have, keep reading and find out!

Memory Foam And Chemicals

Memory foam is typically made of the same ingredients no matter where you buy it from, but different companies may use a slightly different adhesive when gluing the layers together. When you first receive your memory foam mattress, you may notice a smell upon opening it. This is caused by the polyurethane in the mattress itself. The chemical smell then dissipates into the air in a process known as off-gassing. It’s recommended to leave your memory foam mattress in a well-ventilated room for a few days prior to its use. This way you can avoid any of the potential irritation that some people experience during off-gassing. Although this is thought to be the only chemical irritation people have while sleeping on a memory foam mattress, it doesn’t make it free of chemicals.

Organic Mattresses And Chemicals

Organic mattresses are usually made from organic wool or cotton and cashmere. These can be created without the use of chemicals, and their organic status means no pesticides were used either. However, just because a mattress is organic, doesn’t mean it’s chemical free. A mattress needs to be made from fire-resistant materials or it has to be treated with the same chemicals that make it fire retardant. This means, that even if your mattress is listed as organic. It’s a good idea to check how it’s been made fire retardant if you want to avoid chemicals.

Natural Mattresses And Chemicals

You could also check out natural mattresses. These can be made from natural latex, cotton, and more. They don’t have any synthetic or man-made materials in them, so their composition is chemical free. But again, they will most likely have some form of fire retardant sprayed onto them so that they meet the required health and safety standards.

Although all mattresses are technically not toxic, some people do worry about the chemicals that are released through off-gassing and through fire retardants. However, it’s not possible to find a mattress that is 100% chemical free. If it says that it is, you should question the manufacturer and ask how they meet the health and safety guidelines. This way you can ensure you’re getting a mattress that’s not only comfy but safe. If you want to avoid chemicals as much as you can, you might want to go for an organic or natural mattress instead of a foam one. Studies have shown that memory foam is completely safe to sleep on, you just need to be aware of the off-gassing process. Finding the right mattress for you is essential for your sleep health, so make sure you do your research and you’ll be able to get the perfect night’s sleep.
