How To Stay Fit While Traveling - 7 Tricks You Can Fit Into Your Itinerary

June 29, 2022

Whenever you travel, you’re most likely looking forward to the food, the scenery, the fun activities, and the culture you can experience.

It’s normal to let yourself go and have fun during vacation, so exercise is probably the last thing in your mind.

However…

Consistency is key when it comes to fitness. Who knows what could happen to your body if you stop exercising in a week?

So, we’re here to help you learn how to stay fit while traveling. Let’s get going.

1. Go To The Local Gym

One of the things you can consider when planning your travels is if your hotel has a gym or if there’s a gym nearby.

You can try going to a boxing gym if you’ve never been to one, as boxing has many health and fitness benefits. This boxing and martial arts website can help you start your boxing journey.

2. Go Out

You can go out for a morning run or just a casual walk during your free time. You can even exercise on outdoor structures, such as long staircases.

Apart from keeping you fit, this allows you to explore the area and discover new sights along the way. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find a store, a cafe, or a picturesque view that you may want to visit later on.

You can appreciate these places even more if you go out early, as there are usually fewer tourists around during the morning.

3. Minimize Vehicular Transportation

If you want to stay fit while traveling, you need to minimize the time you spend sitting. Therefore, it’s best to just walk instead of taking public transportation.

Not only is it free to walk from place to place, but this also allows you to explore the area further.

Meanwhile, you can rent a bike if your next destination is far away. Always ensure that you have a GPS on your phone and wear the proper safety equipment.

4. Incorporate Local Activities Into Your Itinerary

If you want to dedicate your free time to rest, you can do activities that feel like you’re exercising while traveling.

For example, you can go on a sightseeing walk for hours, hike on the local nature trail, do watersports like surfing, or challenge yourself with rock climbing.

You can also immerse yourself in cultural activities, such as salsa in Spain, Muay Thai in Thailand, cross-country skiing in Norway, Chinese martial arts, and more. There are even local fitness classes out there that are usually free for your first session.

These activities let you meet locals and learn about different cultures, adding to your overall travel experience.

5. Work Out In Your Hotel Room

Another option is to exercise in your hotel room. If you brought lightweight equipment like hand grips, resistance bands, or a jump rope, this is where they come into play.

You can do a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout. In this exercise technique, bursts of high-intensity movements are followed by short periods of low-intensity movements for recovery.

A HIIT workout is an effective method of increasing your heart rate and burning fat in a short amount of time.

If you don’t have any equipment, don’t worry. Your body weight is also a form of resistance you can use. You can find many workout routines online that don’t require equipment.

6. Do Yoga

After your fun day of activities, yoga is a great way to relax and stretch out your muscles. Besides a good night’s sleep, this can improve your balance, strength, and flexibility.

Yoga is also respectful to your downstairs neighbors, as you’re not performing quick and loud movements.

7. Eat Healthily

Of course, traveling wouldn’t be complete without trying the local foods in your destination. Each place has a healthy menu to choose from, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on the culture.

You can also bring healthy snacks along the way, so you have a healthy option on-hand if you can’t find a good place to eat.

Finally, always remember to drink plenty of water during your trip.

Bottom Line

Maintaining a consistent workout routine is hard when you’re constantly moving from one place to another. But once you stop exercising, it will be harder to get back into shape when you return home.

Traveling is meant to be fun and relaxing, so the last thing you want to do is stress out about staying fit. Therefore, we recommend incorporating exercise into your activities as naturally as possible.

This way, you can still enjoy your trip while keeping yourself fit.
