Practical Tips to Prepare for College Dorm Move-In Day

June 3, 2022

Getting ready for college dorm move-in day can be stressful. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to prepare in order to make your experiences as easy as possible. Following are several tips you can use to successfully plan for your college move-in day.

Coordinate With Your Roommate

If possible, email your roommate and decide who will be responsible for bringing the minifridge, television, and other larger items which take up space. You don't want to end up having multiple items that you only need one of. By coordinating with your roommate early, you'll be able to avoid packing more than you need.

Make a List of Your Essential Items

Think about the items you want to bring from home, and make a list of the essentials that you'll need to have on hand as soon as you arrive. Don't forget your computer, school supplies, backpack, and other items you'll need for your first day of class. Try to leave behind items like toiletries, seasonal clothing, and other things that you likely won't need right away. You can always pick up a few things at the store once you arrive on campus.

Enlist Some Help

If you are packing more than just a few boxes or if you need to bring your own furniture, you may want to ask a few friends if they would be willing to help move you into your dorm room. While there will likely be many students and their families on campus while you are moving in, you can't necessarily depend on them for any help, as they may be busy doing the same thing you are doing. By bringing a friend on campus to help you can rest assured that you will have assistance if and when you need it.

Have Your Vehicle Shipped to You

If your college is more than a few hours away, you'll want to find a fast, reliable car shipping service to transport your vehicle if you plan on flying to your destination. If you're in need of professional car shipping services in Texas or in your local area, a quick online search will connect you with the right company for you. Make sure the car shipping service you choose offers fair pricing on their services. A reputable car shipping service will provide you with excellent communication throughout the process, so you can rest assured that your vehicle will arrive safe and sound.

Just Pack Essential Items

Avoid the temptation of bringing more items than necessary. Don't pack your seasonal clothing yet either. If you are moving in during the fall, you probably won't need your heavy winter gear unless you are going to college in a colder climate. Wait until you go home for break to gather things you think you'll need as the weather changes. This may also be the perfect time to take home anything you didn't end up needing on campus.

Double Check Your Specified Move-In Date

Larger campuses often have specified move-in times and dates for their dorms. This is done in order to avoid an overcrowded campus and make moving in more efficient for everyone. Ensure you have the right time and date before heading out to campus. If you show up too early or at the wrong time, there's a possibility that they will turn you away and have you wait until your designated time arrives.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience

Living in a college dorm is a rite of passage for many young people. While you may be nervous about living with a stranger or moving away from home, just know that everything is going to be okay. Many of your fellow dormmates are likely feeling the same way too. While you may be tempted to skip the optional dorm activities and social hours, try to break out of your shell and give them a chance. By attending these events you will meet a wide variety of people from all different backgrounds and experiences. You will probably even make a few new friends too.

Moving into your college dorm room can be an exciting, yet stressful time. Remember to take a deep breath and enjoy the process. By taking the time to plan accordingly, you will be more likely to enjoy a smooth and easy move-in day.
