Traveling with your pet can be an amazing experience as long as you know what you are doing. However, many pet parents just take their animals with them without considering all the risks or obligations.

It takes a lot more than a neck pillow, travel blanket, and their favorite toy to ensure your furry companion is comfortable on the road. So, before you plan your next vacation, or your trip turns into a nightmare, read these tips that don't only ensure you have a great time with your best friend, but both of you stay safe at the same time.

Bring some items from home

As we already mentioned, your pet needs to feel comfortable on the road, and some animals tend to freak out when they change scenery. However, you can minimize this discomfort by bringing some of their toys, bedding, food, and overall things your pet is fond of.

It's best if you could keep all of these items easily accessible during travel. You could use packing cubes to stay organized. So, when you feel your pet is upset, you can give them their favorite toy or maybe some delicious treat.

Bring a carrier

Everyone recommends you keep your pets in a carrier while in moving vehicles. For instance, cats don't like car travel, but carriers help them minimize the level of stress and keep them secure and stable. To avoid career moving all over the place, don't forget to secure it with a seatbelt.

Get familiar with policies

If you are traveling by plane, you need to review airline and state policies. We don't suggest putting your pet into a cargo hold due to a variety of reasons. They might not be safe or be under a lot of stress. However, this is the only way to transport animals for some airlines.

On the other hand, some airlines will allow you to bring smaller cats or dogs in a carrier as your carry-on item in the cabin. However, make sure to research this thoroughly before making any decisions.

Make frequent breaks

Are you visiting some national parks, or maybe you are hiking on the East Coast? Whatever the case may be, if you are taking your dog on a long trip, they won’t be able to tolerate more than six hours without taking a break.

It's important to make regular stops to allow your furry companion to take bathroom breaks, stretch, and intake some fresh air. Keep in mind that cats don't need breaks that often, but plan a couple of stops for them as well.

Have an emergency plan

Hopefully, everything will go smoothly, but preparing yourself for the worst-case scenario is crucial. For example, your furry companion might get lost or fall. That's why equip them with ID tags and have a few photos of them on your phone.

Don't go on vacation without a first aid kit or medical records.

Packing list

In addition to the usual items, you will bring with you on vacation, you need an ultimate travel packing list that ensures you pack everything you need. Let's see what items this list should contain:

Bedding and favorite toys

  • Dog toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Waste bags or a little box for your cat
  • Collar or a leash
  • Carrier or a crate
  • Food treats and collapsible travel bowls
  • Medical and vaccination records
  • Health certificate
  • Towels and grooming supplies
  • First aid kit
  • Laundry bag

How to prep your car?

At this point, everyone is focused on preparing themselves and their pet for the vacation, so no one is thinking about the car, right? Well, if you plan to travel with any type of vehicle, this is a necessary step.

Whether you have an SUV or a minivan, you must make it pet-friendly. The best car for traveling will depend on your furry companion's size. But here are some guidelines you should have in mind:

  • Set up a crate so it lies flat.
  • Make sure to place a water dish inside a crate.
  • Secure the crate, so it doesn't move around.
  • If not using a crate, put your furry companion in a pet seater.
  • Have doggy bags and toilet paper available all the time in case your pet makes a mess.

While traveling with your pet can be a challenging experience, don't forget to have fun. After all, you will visit new places, try new things, and meet new people. But, once you have everything you need, you can literally go to the end of the world.

We believe that now is the time to hit the road and create some of the most beautiful memories with your four-legged companion.
