12 Things To Keep In Mind When Looking For a Tent

July 19, 2022

Good tents are not cheap so buying one is a serious commitment. It is easy to get lost among all the kinds on the market, especially if you do not have a lot of camping experience. The tent you opt for may later determine the advantages you go for, so it is best to think twice.

Here is a list of thirteen things to take into consideration when going on a tent hunt:

1. Decide how spacious you need it to be

  • You have to ask yourself the following questions:
  • How many people do I want to travel with?
  • Am I planning to keep my belongings inside the tent?
  • Do I want to take a dog on a trip?
  • How comfortable am I sleeping near more than two people?

The size of a tent is the most important difference there is between different kinds. However, it is not as simple as that — even if you are planning to travel alone, you need insights to know how to choose a one-person tent. Keep reading to get some!

2. Seasonal aspect

There are two categories of tents when it comes to dealing with the weather: four-season tents and three-season tents. What is the difference?

Three-season tents are great for hot weather (which is when most people go camping). It can be used from March to November. On the other hand, four-season tents can also be used in winter. Naturally, they are not as cheap and light to carry around, as they offer an extra layer for cold protection.

There is no point in paying extra if you are not into winter camping. However, if it does sound appealing, buying a universal tent can be the ultimate choice for you. You can look for high-quality six-person tents for cold camping and use one all year long.

3. How much weight are you ready to carry?

Every person looking for a tent wants it to be big and light. Unfortunately, that is not how physics works. If you want a lot of extra space, you need to prepare yourself to carry a pretty impressive weight. Therefore, it may be wise to compromise the space and opt for a light one if you are hiking or riding a bike. However, you do not have to worry about this at all if you plan a car camping trip.

4. How much floor area do you need?

Basically, this shows how many square feet you get in your tent. It might seem irrelevant at first, but there is a big difference between a person who is 5’2 and one who is 6’2. Consequently, you have to take into consideration how much space you take, not only how many people there will be. Some people just take a more considerable option to make sure there is plenty of space, but we have already mentioned that it also means extra weight.

5. Think about the non-sleeping area

Most modern tents offer you a non-sleeping area where you can eat, keep stuff or just relax. It does not have the floor but shelters you from the rain or sun. It is very convenient, especially if you are going for a smaller tent that does not offer a lot of space.

6. The matter of height

Regardless of how big they are, tents can be high or low. The low ones will still be comfortable for sleeping but probably not as convenient for sitting. If you are tall, getting a high one is recommended, so you have space for moving around.

7.  How many walls do you need?

Some tents only have one layer of wall and, therefore, weigh much less. Though they can still protect you from the sun, they are not very good for rain. On the other hand, double-wall ones will protect you better but allow less ventilation which can lead to condensation and stiffed air. Fundamentally, you can choose any kind, but be aware of the consequences and make sure to install extra rain protection or ventilation when it is needed.

8.  Right attachment

Your tent's parts must be carefully attached so that your sleeping area is stable and secure. There are different methods to ensure this, but clips and sleeves are the most popular ones. Clips allow better air circulation while sleeves are more reliable.

9.  Entrance issue

Doors play a crucial role in camping. First of all, they protect you from any animals or insects that might want to enter your tent at night. Also, if they are of poor quality, they can cause major discomfort and even injury. Therefore, you must always make sure that the doors work properly. It is also great to have a protective net that allows you to open the door without letting insects enter.

10. The Poles

Tent poles are made from different materials such as fiberglass and aluminum. Even though fiberglass is cheaper, it is highly recommended to buy a tent with aluminum poles as they are much more reliable and give your time a longer life.

11.  Air circulation

We have already talked about various kinds of tents and how much ventilation they offer. However, there is more than that. You can have a tent with windows and extra ventilation that allows more air to enter your tent. This is especially important if you are traveling in summer and the area you have chosen is sunny. Make sure that all the windows are equipped with a net to prevent intruders.

Bottom line

Picking a tent is a responsible task — you are not just looking for camping equipment but choosing a home for yourself that you can carry around wherever you go. Remember about the main things you want from a tent: comfort, safety, and longevity. Start by setting priorities and coming to conclusions about what you need, and you will definitely find the ultimate tent!
