4 Things to Consider When Buying A Marble countertop

July 4, 2022

Are you considering buying a marble countertop for your kitchen? Well, you’ve come to the right place because, in this post, we’ll be going over 4 things you must consider when making the purchase.

So let’s get straight into it…

1. Porous abilities:

Generally, with regards to the nature of countertops, the porosity or bulkiness of countertops is a key factor for the safety of countertops. They’re classified into terms “porous” and “non-porous”. Porous countertops are a surface with tiny or large pores. For instance, granite and marble are porous surfaces. In contrast to porous surfaces, their non-porous counterparts are sealed and bulky. Corian and engineered quartz are naturally non-porous. In regard to hygienic problems, porosities in the countertops serve as an active harbour for bacteria to settle, making a film of colonies.

2. Corner angel:

Edging design is the second concern for marble countertops. Designers highly recommend rounded edges in marble countertops for designing houses due to the reduction of risks. If you have kids running around the place, a rounded edge is highly recommended.

3. Heat resistance:

A lot of people enquire about the heat resistance of hot pans on the top of marble countertops. While marble countertops are the softest among other kinds of counterparts like granite and quartz, they can withstand hot pans surprisingly well However, it’s best to use a trivet to better preserve the life of your expensive marble worktop. Even though marble is heat resistant, it’s not heatproof, it can be discolored if not looked after properly,

How would I disinfect a marble countertop?

Marble counterlops are durable and stain resistance but they still need some maintenance in routine. Another issue regarding marble countertops is sanitizing the surface of countertops to minimize the possible health hazards. This concern originates from the porous surface of marble as it can adsorb microorganisms, viruses and bacteria. Various instructions exist for cleaning countertops.

First of all, rubbing the surface with soapy water and soft cotton cloth can be useful to kill pathogens. However, this makes a slippery surface. Secondly, the mixture of bleach, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar can remove microbes. For removing stains, we suggest using hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of ammonia and rubbing it on the surface with soft pads. Another option is wiping Lysol, Clorox or other sanitisers to kill it bacteria. If you want to keep the counterlop in good condition for a long time period then always use the soft cloth for cleaning and avoid the abresive material for cleaning purpose. You can also use the mild surface cleaners with soft cloth to clean the surface.

Conclusion

Those were 4 things to consider when purchasing a marble countertop. Marble is porous so you’ll need to reseal it every quarter as a best practice. It requires more maintenance compared to other countertops such as quartz but it looks stunning. Never use the sharp or abresive material for the cleaning of your marble counterlop if you want to keep it in a good condition. You have to consider what’s more important to you.
