Construction Site Safety

July 6, 2022

People working in the construction industry like the Construction inspector, worker, flooring installer, brick masons, and engineers need to be protected from the hazards that come with their job., it’s difficult for them to do their job correctly to the best of their ability without site safety

Here are some of the hazards on the construction site:

Falling From Heights

The Health and Safety Executive found that falls from heights accounted for a quarter of all deaths on the construction sites. To prevent these types of disasters, all on-site personnel, including engineers, must be trained to work with heavy equipment and install it on various surfaces and work safely on ladders, scaffolding, and roofs.

One should learn the emergency protocols and assess any risks associated with working at the height.

Moving Objects

Construction folks often run the risk of being hit by oncoming forklifts, excavators, backhoes, cranes, and other moving equipment.

All engineers must be aware of their surroundings and wear reflective jackets to increase their visibility and improve overall construction safety.

Falls And Slips

Construction sites are among the most dangerous places when it comes to falls. Construction folks can easily trip over some steel cables or slip on wet tiles or ice and then fall on hard concrete or other harmful elements.

Such falls can be avoided by designating walking areas. And keep clutter and obstacles off the stairs. To minimize the effects of a fall, Construction folks should always wear hard hats in addition to boots to improve traction.

Construction is generally noisy, with all the shelling and heavy equipment moving and screaming. Noise is another serious hazard that can gradually deafen construction workers and cause significant ailments such as stress and headaches.

Ways to Avoid Construction Hazards

1.) Utilize Proper Fall Protection

According to the OSHA brochure, falls from great heights are responsible for most injuries and fatalities on construction sites.

The rest of the falls are usually associated with openings in the walls, holes in the floor, scaffolding, roofs, or open edges. To prevent these falls, construction sites must have adequate fall protection.

To prevent these falls, construction sites must have proper fall protection. Some best practices for fall prevention include installing guardrails.

2.) Keep a Clean, Hazard-Free Construction Zone

Site supervisors have to keep construction sites safe for their workers. This means scanning the area for debris or hazards that could prevent someone from doing their job safely. Construction Zone - Keep all sidewalks clear of clutter, spills, junk, or wires. Anything that could cause someone to trip and fall should be removed.

Store large materials correctly. Separate areas should be designated to store tools and materials until required. Anything that could fall should be laid flat or adequately secured. Remove any protruding nails.

Keep the special equipment away from other materials that could cause a fire or expose someone to the risk of electric shock.

3.) Provide Personal Protective Equipment

The purpose of personal protective equipment in the construction industry is to minimize hazardous risks related to chemicals, electricity, the use of machinery, loud noises, falling debris, etc. Construction workers must have the correct protective equipment for their job.

Some protective equipment is:

Safety Glasses

Steel-toed boots and Slip-Resistant Shoes Earplugs/Earmuffs

Hard Hats Respirators Full Body Suits

4.) Have Proper Communication in Place

Effective communication is one of the most important aspects of maintaining a safe construction environment. This case study from the construction industry shows how communication plays a crucial role in executing a construction project safely.

Two-way radios are essential for effective communication in collaborative work like construction. However, many construction sites are outside the mobile phone range.

In this case, employees must access satellite phones to keep in touch. A satellite phone with push-to-talk capability is ideal, and some locations may require a device that also provides satellite internet.

ICOM IC-SAT100M is the best satellite devices for construction. The IC-SAT100M is a dedicated push-to-talk (PTT) radio. This fixed-mount solution gives users only what they need and nothing that they don’t.

Construction teams can be anywhere on the planet, even in the most remote areas of the world and can communicate with each other with the push of a button.
