How To Deal With The Rising Cost of Materials

July 26, 2022

In the construction world, everybody is increasing their prices. One of the reasons is the cost of living. The other reason is due to the rising cost of materials and everything linked to construction has increased in price.

If you work in construction, you are probably trying to find ways where you can still maintain your profit margins without increasing your prices. However, you also want to keep that quality. Luckily, you have come to the right place, telling you different things about how you can save money on your materials.

Why Has The Cost of Materials Increased?

Over the past few years, the world has changed a lot. Covid-19 was the beginning of the market change and governments gave money for people to live. Due to this, the government now needs to earn that money back. Furthermore, factories had to reduce their staff because they were unable to pay them. Due to this, there were delays in materials that affected suppliers, providers and buyers. As you can see, it had a domino effect on everybody.

Covid-19 wasn’t the only thing that affected the prices. The war between Russia and Ukraine has also increased the expense of materials. Not only this, but in the United Kingdom, Brexit has affected the cost of materials.

High demand is another reason that the prices have increased. During Covid, people weren't working for the first part of lockdown, especially construction workers. As soon as they were allowed to work again, there was a lot of demand for materials, meaning suppliers increased their prices. According to the economic laws, prices must rise as the demand for materials such as timber and metals increases.

There are many reasons why the cost of materials has increased recently. Some of them are out of your hands which is why you are struggling. Nonetheless, there are a few things that you can do to work against these.

How To Deal With Rising Costs?

How do you deal with the rising costs of materials? It is out of your control but there are a few things that can be done.

Reduce The Number of Materials You Order

If you are a large company, we would advise you to start wearing the materials you order. Furthermore, when you own a storage unit, it is easy to overbuy products and leave them in your storage unit. There is nothing wrong with this however for those that don’t own a storage unit, we suggest you reduce the products that you order.

If you start ordering for the amount you need, you will start saving money with each job. Now and again, you will have materials left over. Moreover, if you have material left there can easily be stored in a garage or your vehicle. Reduce your order so you are not going overkill with materials you don’t often use then you will save money, although it depends on your trade.

Consider Lean Construction

Not many people know about lean construction which is what we will explain here. Lean construction development and research combined in design and construction simplifies the whole process of these materials. It is production management that works on the delivery of materials and is something construction businesses are using to save money on materials.

BIM Technology

Planning with BIM will save you a lot of time and money as well. It will give an overview of projects, no matter the size of the job. This technology is designed to save money on materials and work out how many materials you will need for the job.

A Construction Management Software

The key to saving money on your jobs is proper management. Everybody must know what is going on. Additionally, you need to ensure that everybody knows when and what materials you need to order. A good construction management software system will keep everybody up to date. When you are working on a large job, it is important that everybody keeps up to date and knows how far the job is off from being completed.

You Need To Enter Each Job With a Plan

Many businesses will treat every job the same which is not always the case. A business should treat every job differently as well as have a different financial plan. Materials are expensive, as are fuel and other things that contribute to the overall cost. All of those prices will contribute to the final bill so if you can find ways to save money and charge less than your competitors, you are onto a winner.

As mentioned earlier, only take the materials that you need for a job. However, many jobs will always need certain materials so there is no harm in overstocking those particular materials. For example, a blind fitter will always need screws for fitting Ruislip blinds, Venetian blinds, shutter blinds, roller blinds and many more. Just like a builder will always need cement for their jobs.

Summary

As you can see, there are things you can do to save money when buying products. As soon as you start working out the ways you can save money, have a strategic plan and ensure you use an operating system that will keep everyone organised in the business.
