Complete Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Home

October 6, 2022

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and the flowers are blooming. It can only mean one thing: spring is here! As the weather starts to warm up, it's time to start thinking about spring cleaning. But where do you start? This comprehensive checklist will help you clean and organize your home in no time!

Start with the roof: You can never go wrong with spring cleaning when starting with the roof. Check for missing or broken shingles, evaluate whether you need to repair or replace the flashing around your chimney and exhaust vents, and look for any other telltale signs of damage. Here are a few things to consider while you are up there:

Clear off all roof debris: Check for leaves, branches, and any other debris that may have been collected on the roof. This should be done before any repairs or maintenance is done to prevent causing damage to your roof.

Inspect gutters: Make sure that all gutters are free of debris and functioning properly- it's important to ensure that the water from rain or melting snow can flow freely away from your house. If you find clogs in the gutter system, clean them out.

Check for moss and algae buildup: While on the roof, keep an eye out for signs of moss and algae growth- these can cause damage to shingles over time if left untreated. Take time to scrub off visible areas using a stiff-bristled brush and warm water.

Replace/repair broken shingles: Look for any cracked, missing, or loose shingles and replace them as needed. Check the entire roof, even areas that may be harder to reach.

Inspect flashing: Flashing is a waterproof material used around chimneys and exhaust vents- this must be in good condition, so your home stays dry during the wet season. Replace any damaged or corroded pieces with new ones.

External Walls: Once you are done with your roof, it's time to move to the external walls. External walls take the worst of the dust and pollution and need help to stay clean and look new. Here's what you can do:

Power wash walls: Pressure washing is an effective way to remove dirt, dust, and other buildups from the exterior walls of your home. It is important to use the right pressure setting to avoid causing any damage to the wall or mortar.

Check for cracks and holes: While power washing, keep an eye out for any visible signs of damage, such as cracks or holes in the walls. These need to be fixed quickly as they can lead to bigger problems if left unchecked.

Fill gaps with caulk: Caulk should be applied around windows, doors, and anywhere else where there may be a gap between two materials- this will help keep out dust, dirt, and insects.

Clean windows: Cleaning the windows is a great way to bring more natural light into your home. Start by wiping down the frames with a damp cloth and then use a glass cleaner to clean the glass. Make sure to check for any damage or cracks in the window panes.

Move inside: Once you are done with the external walls, it's time to move inside the house. Here are a few things to keep in mind while you are inside:

Dust and vacuum: Now that the weather is warming up, it's time to eliminate any dust or dirt accumulating in your home over winter. Start by dusting off all furniture and surfaces using an electrostatic cloth, then vacuum carpets and rugs with an attachment for hard-to-reach areas.

Clean kitchen appliances: Give your kitchen appliances a deep clean by wiping them down with soapy water or white vinegar solution. Remember to check behind the fridge and ovens for any crumbs or food spills left behind.

Organize closets and cabinets: Take some time to organize the items in your closet and cabinets- this will make it easier to find things when you need them. You can also donate clothes or items that have not been used in a while.

Deep clean bathrooms: To keep your bathroom looking fresh, give it a thorough deep clean every few months. Start by scrubbing the tiles, then move on to cleaning toilets, tubs, and sinks using an antibacterial cleaner. Finally, mop the floors with warm water and soap solution.

Finally, the attic and the garage: The best for the last. Attics, garages, and basements are the rooms that get the least attention. When summer cleaning, look for any signs of water damage, mold, or pest infestations. Clear out any clutter and organize items as you go- this will make future cleanings much easier. Finally, use a vacuum cleaner with an attachment to eliminate dust, cobwebs, and other allergens lurking in the corners.

Now that you have completed your spring cleaning checklist for your home, you can sit back and enjoy the results! The effort may be tedious, but it is worth looking around your house and seeing everything shining like new. So take some time to appreciate all that hard work!
